 November 2022
Dear Duke Families and Parents-
As the fall semester comes to a close and the winter holiday is upon us, we are reflective of our amazing Duke families and want to take this moment to express our gratitude. Thank you for being such a wonderful extension of our community!
With classes wrapping up in a few weeks and finals approaching, we understand that students may experience increased stress, as this can be an anxiety-inducing period for many. Here are a few tips for families to help your student in the upcoming weeks:
  • Be a support system: Let your student know that you are there for them and can provide a sense of comfort and stability. Ask them how they would like to be supported and what they may need during this time.
  • Encourage stress relief activities: While your student is balancing their studies, help them to prioritize time to re-energize and care for their overall well-being.
  • Do mental health check-ins: Help your students name their stressors and emotions. If they feel overwhelmed, encourage them to take advantage of the wellness resources on campus. From Moments of Mindfulness with DuWell to Individual Counseling appointments with Counseling & Psychological Services, a wide range of resources are in place to support your student's mental wellbeing. Visit https://students.duke.edu/wellness/ to learn more.
We are grateful for your continued engagement with us and the support of your Duke student. We wish you all the best this holiday season.
GO DUKE!

Job Outlook Report for Class of 2023 Just Released
Shawn VanDerziel, Executive Director at the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), wrote in a recent announcement:
We’ve all heard the stories about employers cutting back on hiring and that a recession may be imminent - which could impact the job market. Interestingly, though, our newest research indicates that employers are planning to increase hiring of new and recent college grads overall by nearly 15%. While 1 in 5 employers did say they are planning for a recession, only a small portion of those expect to cut back on entry-level hires.
It’s important to point out, as the below graph demonstrates, not all employers are planning to increase their hiring, in fact, a large number are planning to maintain their hiring numbers, while a small percent are planning to decrease hiring – when totaling all the potential hires, there is an increase of 14.7%. For this reason, it’s hard to view these employer responses as anything but positive overall and a cause for optimism during these uncertain economic times.
The full Job Outlook report is filled with really interesting findings about what employers are thinking and doing. Click here to view the Full Report.
