Social Justice Conference 2020:

You(Th) Can Change the World

On January 27, Upper School students will participate in a conference organized by students and Coordinator of Multicultural Life Claire Romero. The conference, in its fourth year, was inspired by the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others who have labored to make the world more just and safe for all. YOUth Can Change the World: Social Justice Conference 2020 will explore many topics of interest to our students, including body image and eating disorders; community building and implicit bias; destigmatizing mental illness (to create safety for students); human trafficking; hunting as conservation and connection; gun violence in schools; and more.

Students will also participate in a film festival with faculty-led discussions on some wonderful films, including Maiden (women who participated in the Whitbread Race Around the World in 1989), 13th (prison pipeline affecting African American men), and Won't You Be My Neighbor (Mr. Rogers inspires listening and kindness).

Contact Claire Romero with questions.

RAUL MIDÓN, GRAMMY-NOMINATED PREP ALUMNUS, PLAYING AT THE LENSIC

The wonderful and magnetic Raul Midón '84 is returning to his hometown to play at The Lensic on February 5 at 7:30 pm. This performance is a community-wide benefit concert for Breakthrough Santa Fe and Tuition Assistance at Santa Fe Prep in honor of Jim Leonard's 21 years as Head of School.
Buy your tickets here now!
Raul has collaborated with musicians Herbie Hancock, Bill Withers, Queen Latifah, Snoop Dogg, and Spike Lee, to name a few. Midón was told as a child that his blindness meant “you can’t do this, you can’t do that,” and since then, he has lived a life devoted to beating the odds and shattering stereotypes. “As someone who has never seen, I’ve always felt at a disadvantage, in that lyric writing is usually very visual,” he says. “People really relate to images, and I’ve never seen images. But what I realized early on is that you have to write from what you know, and I hear, touch and feel intensely – and those are sensations and experiences that everyone can relate to.”

COLLEGE NIGHT PRESENTATION

Don’t miss our annual College Night Presentation on Monday January 27 at 5:30 pm in the auditorium. All Upper School families are strongly encouraged to attend.
We are excited to announce this year’s speaker: Dr. Angel B. Pérez, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success at Trinity College. Pérez was recently featured in The New York Times Magazine article, "What College Admissions Offices Really Want," for his groundbreaking work at Trinity. Pérez has transformed enrollment and campus culture by adopting values-based, student-centered strategies, including adopting a test-optional policy and using character in evaluation. To reduce the financial and administrative burden on the lowest income students, he dropped the application fee for first-generation students and created a four-year financial aid awarding system. Dr. Pérez is at the forefront of dynamic changes in the college admissions process and other programming to ensure student access and success. Come learn about the future of higher education!

Mark Your Calendar: IN THE HEIGHTS

This year's musical is coming soon: the Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights by Lin-Manual Miranda, who also wrote and starred in Hamilton. Join us on Feb 28 at 7:00 pm, Feb 29 at 7:00 pm, or March 1 at 2:00 pm. See you there!

SFP PARENT COMMUNITY BOOK READ

The Parents' Association is very excited to launch a book read for our Prep community! With the assistance of Head of School Jim Leonard and the English Department, we have selected The History of Love, a novel by Nicole Krauss. This is a book about many forms of love: romantic, familial, neighborly, and the love of storytelling.
We invite you to visit your local bookstore or library to pick up a copy and join us in reading together as a community. We will have a fun, informal evening book discussion in early spring, facilitated by Jim Leonard and English teacher Doug Arnwine.
Until then, we hope you enjoy a chance to discuss the book with your friends and fellow parents around campus and around town!

Breakthrough Profile: DAniel and Maria

Every Saturday of the summer before Daniel went off to college, he and his sister Maria worked together at their dad’s mechanic shop. They both recall this summer fondly, especially the coffee and lunch runs they made together for themselves and the mechanics. Nowadays, the siblings spend more time apart than together, as Daniel is a Davis NM Scholar at the University of Portland, and Maria is completing her senior year at Capital High School. Despite their physical distance, their bond is strengthened by their shared commitment to education. Daniel is currently on a pre-med path, with plans to one day become a surgeon. Maria is applying to college and hopes to pursue law or business.

Alumni, Thanks for Joining US!

Nearly 200 grads, faculty, and staff gathered in the Library on December 27 for Prep's Annual Alumni Holiday Party. Thank you to everyone who braved the chilly night for Jim Leonard's final holiday party as our Head of School. And special thanks to Molly Leonard '12 who toasted her dad and shared a few thoughts "as a totally unbiased, third-party observer:"

The last thing I will say—and I know I speak for Kelsey and Campbell when I say this—is that it is such a weird and special privilege to watch your parents be really good at their jobs...I got to watch my dad teach, coach, mentor, be way too intense in Middle School dodge ball games. I got to watch my dad try out for —and make!—the boy's varsity soccer team for like eleven years in a row. I got to watch him raise-up so many of us. You know, being the Principal's daughter can be a mixed bag sometimes, but being your daughter, Jim Leonard, is such a privilege.

Earlier in the day former and current Griffin basketball players gathered in the Gym for men's and women's basketball games. Thanks to everyone who joined us—it was wonderful to see you all! Hope you enjoy this slideshow of the day's festivities.
