Two years out from getting her degree in both economics and environmental policy, Alessandra Vidal Meza ’22 has worked with the National Audubon Society and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, completed a master’s degree in environmental data science at UC Santa Barbara, and is now starting a Ph.D. from the same institution. Arches recently spoke with Vidal Meza about growing up in South America and becoming a scientist while staying true to her ancestral and cultural roots.

Professor and Director of Business & Leadership, and George Frederick Jewett Distinguished Professor Jeffrey Matthews delivered the keynote address at Michigan State University’s Professional Ethics Symposium on Nov. 11. The symposium explored the intersection of ethics, trust, and leadership; managing professional ethics and sustainability as a leader; and balancing transparency, confidentiality, and trust in leadership.

Logger Football receiver Joe Gallagher ’26 is leading the country in Division III in a somewhat obscure stat—receptions (122) and receptions per game (13.6). That's thanks to the Loggers' pass-heavy offense and Gallagher's intense work ethic, which includes catching at least 100 passes a day.
"Everyone that we play knows that everything goes through Joe and they can’t stop him," Head Coach Jeff Thomas told The Olympian in an article featuring Gallagher.

Legacy of Community Service
|
Alumnus and former trustee C. Mark Smith ’61 passed away at the age of 89. Smith earned degrees in history and political science from Puget Sound before embarking on a career in economic development. A resident of the Tri-Cities in Eastern Washington, Smith was the author of five books about Washington state history. Smith was honored with the university's Lifetime Professional Achievement Award in 2012.

A Bright Future for Salmon
|
Students in Prof. Dan Sherman's Intro to the Environment class got up close and personal with salmon and other native species during a visit to South Prairie Creek Preserve, where restoration efforts are underway to restore salmon habitat along this important tributary of the Carbon River.
