Spring 2025 Research Compliance Reminders |
As you prepare for the new semester, keep these important compliance steps in mind:
• CITI Training: Ensure it is up-to-date before applying for IRB, IACUC, or IBC approval. A passing score of 80% is required and must be renewed for IRB and IBC (not IACUC).
• Cayuse Access: New faculty and students must submit the user request form before starting IRB, IACUC, or IBC applications.
• Review Timelines: Plan ahead—IRB, IACUC, and IBC protocols may require full committee review (FCR), which can take additional time.
• Export Compliance: Complete required training if your research involves international components (e.g., travel, data transfers).
• Drone Use: Ensure UAS determinations and vendor insurance approvals are completed before using drones on campus (link to site).
• Faculty/Staff Study Closures: Submit closure requests through Cayuse IRB once studies are complete and data are de-identified. If you are faculty sponsor on a graduating Master’s or Doctoral student, incorporate this requirement into the close-out process.
• Protocol Expiration: Check IACUC, IBC, and IRB protocol expiration dates—there is no grace period for expired approvals.
• Personnel Additions: Add personnel early to avoid delays. Contact the Research Compliance Specialist if prompt approval is needed. For already approved projects, this will require a Modification (IRB) or an amendment (IACUC and IBC). Ensure all personnel have completed required CITI training.
• Consent Forms: Use the latest IRB-approved template and review for accuracy.
For questions or assistance, contact the Research Compliance Office.

New IBC SOP on Post-Approval Monitoring |
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) has approved a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Continuing Review, which is one option for Post-Approval Monitoring. This SOP aligns with the Continuing Review requirement in Cayuse Hazard Safety and provides important information about the IBC review process for these submissions.
Faculty are encouraged to review the new SOP to ensure compliance with biosafety protocols. Access the full SOP.
For questions, please contact the IBC office.

Interested in Serving as a Review Panelist for NSF? |
The National Science Foundation is currently looking for review panelists for several programs, including their S-STEM scholarship program.
Why volunteer? Serving as a panelist allows you to learn more about the grant review process. The experience can be an invaluable resource to improve the quality of written proposals and increase their chance of award.
If you are interested, please complete the following questionnaire. You will be contacted by NSF staff if your expertise aligns with the program’s needs based on the collection of submitted proposals.
Contact our Proposal Development team if you have any questions.

Various dates through the Spring; In-Person and Virtual
Writing Circles are small, cross-disciplinary faculty groups who meet at a scheduled time each week to focus on research and writing goals. Scheduling dedicated time with accountability partners can help to keep writing on track while also forming collegial relationships. Choose the day and time that works for you to be matched with a circle.
For questions or concerns, contact Erin Owens (ext. 4-4567).
