Light in the Darkness

As a child growing up on a farm, the winter was a time to slow down and acknowledge that the world had fallen asleep. The physical darkness outside and the quiet of nature was almost tangible in the countryside of Hillsboro, Oregon. Looking back, the season of Advent was the reminder of light in the darkness. The candles of the wreath marked the path to light and the promise of the future.

As an adult, I find refuge in the season of Advent. The Scripture readings and the music of Advent invite me to slow down, seek my path for light and hope, and separate myself from the busyness and business of the celebration of the “Santa Christmas.” The quiet of nature is replaced by the speechless awe that Emmanuel, “God is with us” is no longer a promise but a reality that is waiting for each of us to humbly embrace.

Early Visit from Christmas Elves

The Christmas elves were busy this week! Members of the DLSNC Love Train delivered Jostens graduation preparation packets and scarves to Seniors. Click here to see many of the Seniors in their scarves.

The elves also delivered yummy sandwiches prepared by Ms. Patti and cold-pressed juice from Drink Mamey, owned by Cydnie Smith-McCarthy '12 (see below for an Alumni Spotlight on Cydnie), as well as gifts from the Board of Trustees, to staff prior to the annual staff Christmas gathering so everyone could eat together in their own homes.

All students and staff received a DLSNC school spirit scarf, which will help them stay cozy and warm over the Christmas break.

Alumni Spotlight

At our annual staff Christmas gathering, staff members enjoyed fresh drinks made by Cydnie Smith-McCarthy '12, the owner of Drink Mamey (pronounced mom-aye. See photo of Cydnie above). The genesis of Drink Mamey began when Cydnie's father died in 2018 from a heart attack and her family learned that he had a heart condition that could have been treated by a healthier diet and lifestyle. Cydnie was inspired to learn more about how certain foods affect the body and mind and thus Drink Mamey was born.

Cydnie's father had encouraged her to attend DLSNC and do well in school. She says, “Without my dad, I probably would not have made it through DLSNC. He knew all my teachers and Principal Joy.”

Cydnie attended Santa Fe University in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and graduated in 2016. She earned her degree in Business Arts Management with an emphasis on marketing and branding.

Invitation to Join Virtual Celebration of Las Posadas

Did you know that most Latin American countries celebrate Christmas on the 24th? Did you know that Christmas essentially involves a month of activities and celebrations for Hispanic and Latinx families? The word posada means "inn" or "shelter" in Spanish. In this tradition, the story of Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and their search for a place to stay is re-enacted. The tradition also involves a special song, as well as a variety of Christmas carols, breaking piñatas, and celebration. This year we will be celebrating virtually by presenting an interactive slideshow with fun activities.

We would like to invite you to our virtual "Las Posadas" celebration on December 19, from 6:00–8:00 pm. Please email Ms. Cabrera to get the Google Meet invitation. We look forward to seeing you there!
