January Family Fun at the Gardens

In the Gardens

Visit the Children's Garden

Although Bean Sprouts Family Days is on hiatus until February 17, visitors are still invited to explore the Children's Garden, admire beautiful blooms, and enjoy self-guided activity areas like the sandlot and mud kitchens.
Visit our new Storybook Stroll in the Children's Garden to read Señorita Mariposa, written by Ben Gundersheimer and illustrated by Marcos Almada Rivero, while enjoying a stroll around the garden. Read at your own pace and keep your eye out for a visiting Monarch butterfly!

MISTER G Performance at the Botanical Garden

January 20, 10am-1:15pm

Ben Gundersheimer is a Latin GRAMMY Award-winning artist, author, and educator. Hailed as “a bilingual rock star” by The Washington Post, he was originally dubbed MISTER G by his young students while pursuing a Master of Education degree. His dynamic, interactive bilingual performances aim to dissolve borders and foster cross-cultural connections.

Join us in the beautiful Celebration Garden at San Francisco Botanical Garden for a free concert by MISTER G followed by a book signing and fun family-friendly activities to learn about the important role of pollinators from the Gardens' youth educators.
Visit the Children's Garden before or after the performance to discover our new Storybook Stroll featuring Señorita Mariposa by Ben Gundersheimer.
Free with admission to the Gardens.

Lunar New Year Celebration

February 11, 11am-2pm
Join us for a Lunar Celebration on Sunday, February 11. Participants of all ages can try their hand at traditional calligraphy, origami, and auspicious crafts! Dance along with festive performances – try your luck at our games of fortune and win a prize. Get into the spirit and welcome the Year of the Dragon alongside the San Francisco Bay Area AAPI community!

Growing in the Gardens

Garden After School is Back!

Our outdoor after school program is back for the spring semester! Get your student outside and their hands in the dirt while the earth comes alive again. We'll do some nature journaling, visit the Japanese Tea Garden during cherry blossom season, and study the magnolias as they unfurl and bloom magnificently. Our schedule is flexible and will work with yours - just reach out!
We offer schedules with 2, 3, and 5-day options, and we're flexible as to what those days are! A free Walking School Bus from Jefferson Elementary is included. Optional extended care until 5:30pm.

Little Ones Story Time

Tuesday, January 16, 10:30-11am
Children ages 0-4 and their caregivers are invited to storytime in the library. This month, we're sharing books about one of our favorite animals - owls! Familiar finger plays and songs will round out the program. Feel free to stay and play or read books after the storytime.

Sketching with Sami

January 13, 10am-12pm
Great for the beginner who wants to learn about field sketching to an advanced illustrator who wants a reason to explore the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, join science illustrator Sami Chang as she goes to the San Francisco Botanical Garden.

Story Time and Craft Activity

Sunday, January 21, 10-11am
Children ages 3-8 and their caregivers are invited to storytime in the library, followed by a craft. This month, we're celebrating the season with books about winter as well as one of our favorite animals - owls! Afterward, children can make a brown paper plate owl or a pine cone snowy owl. All materials provided.
