October 2023

Dear Parents and Families,

October is one of our favorite months at Duke! Not only do students have a chance to relax during Fall Break, but they also get prepared to see many of you during Family Weekend. To those we will host next week, we hope you will have safe travels
October also brings many changes to the semester! Students often have their first major assignments and exams, scheduling for the Spring semester is coming soon, and believe it or not, summer opportunities are under consideration.
We are 42 days away from the last day of the fall semester! With the halfway point now behind us, your student will soon be preparing for finals. Some of your students may be looking toward internship opportunities, prepping for graduation, and beginning the job search process (if they haven’t already)! Wherever your student is on their Duke journey, we hope you and your student find time to reflect and appreciate all this semester has to offer.
On behalf of the Duke community, thank you for the many ways you support your student and our university.
GO DUKE!

The Connection Project

Student Involvement & Leadership

Is your student struggling to find connections at Duke? Are they interested in strengthening existing friendships? The Connection Project aims to foster fun, authentic connections among first-year undergraduates through student-led conversations and activities. Here are two upcoming weeks:

Course Registration Event

November 1 |  Bryan Center 101 Lobby |

12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Course registration for next semester is just around the corner! Navigating class selection decisions can be tricky, and discussing ideas with older students can help.
The Connection Project will host a course registration drop-in event with upperclass student coordinators (there will also be pastries and fruit!) on Wednesday, November 1, from 12:00 pm-2:00 pm in the Bryan Center, room 101.

Paint and Sip

November 15 | Gilbert-Addoms Down Under (GADU)

6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

On November 15, from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm in GADU (the lower floor of the Gilbert-Addoms dorm on East Campus), the Connection Project will host a guided conversation about maintaining and building friendships while we paint river rocks and drink boba tea. If your student is interested, they can register on Duke Groups.

Campus Resource:
The Duke Career Center

The Duke University Career Center engages graduate and undergraduate students in discovering and exploring what is meaningful and valuable in their lives and applying this to their career pathways. We accomplish this through our transformative, community-wide career readiness ecosystem, Career Everywhere.
A career is a journey, not a destination. Students actively managing their career pathway is a lifelong, dynamic process, and the Career Center is here to support them as they explore options and navigate opportunities. The Career Development Process is a self-serve tool to help students explore and navigate those opportunities.
We encourage them to explore the process, utilize the resources, develop their skills, and reach out to a career advisor or mentor for support at any time. Students can access the process and skills and many important resources on the Career Center website, Career Hub.
