Happy Holidays from BTS

As we approach the year’s end, our team has gathered ’round to send
A heartfelt wish that you will spend this holiday season filled with joy and friends.
This year you’ve partaken in fun events: biking, walking and cool contests.
We thank you for your participation, making downtown Bethesda a special location.
Now to employers and teleworkers, bus riders, carpoolers and more,
May a spirit of peace visit each home and office door.
We wish you good cheer and a most happy new year.

~ Kristen, Brandan, Allison, and the BTS Advisory Committee

Walk & Ride Challenge Winners

Congratulations to the 2022 Walk & Ride Challenge winning teams, and a huge thank you to all participants!
The Challenge has three Grand Prize categories: first, second and third place. To determine the winning teams, we tally each team member's total steps and divide by the number of members on the team to arrive at each team member’s average number of steps.
Drum roll, please: Three separate teams from ASHP actually swept the Grand Prize categories!
First Place: ASHP Publishing from ASHP
The members of ASHP Publishing walked an average of 176,134 steps over the three-week period. Each team member received a prize package that included a $50 Amazon e-gift card and a $50 Bethesda Bucks e-gift card.
Second Place: Daily Dose from ASHP
The members of Daily Dose walked an average of 175,336 steps over the three-week period. Each team member received a $35 Amazon e-gift card.
Third Place: Hot Girl Walks from ASHP
The members of Hot Girl Walks walked an average of 137,881 steps over the three-week period. Each team member received a $25 Amazon e-gift card.
In addition to the Grand Prize winners, each week we awarded a prize to five people who walked more than 10,000 steps in a week. Those lucky winners were randomly selected, came from different teams, and each received a $50 Amazon e-gift card. Congrats to those weekly winners!
Thanks again to everyone who participated in the 2022 Walk & Ride Challenge. And remember: It’s never too early to start getting your team together for 2023!

Capture Downtown Bethesda’s Winter Magic

The Cool Commute Contest is on! Starting now through February 24, you’re invited to take a photo of downtown Bethesda and send it to Bethesda Transportation Solutions.

Maybe you notice the winter light hitting a building angle just right. Or maybe while you’re walking, biking or riding the bus to work you spot a downtown Bethesda winter scene others would enjoy.
Santa didn’t bring you that Hasselblad or Nikon you wanted (again)? No problem. You don’t need a fancy camera. Most smartphone cameras these days take great photos, and you can email your image to us right from the phone.
  • How: Send pictures to Brandan Stuckey at BStuckey@bethesda.org
  • When: Submit photos from now through February 24, 2023.
  • You Could Win: BTS will select six photos to win $50, $75 and $100 Amazon e-gift cards or Bethesda Bucks e-cards.

IRS Adjusts Commuter Benefit Pre-Tax Limit for 2023

Heads-up to employers that subsidize employee transit passes, vanpool fares, and qualified parking: The Internal Revenue Service recently announced an increase in the pre-tax limit that applies to those employer-provided benefits.

“For tax year 2023, the monthly limitation for the qualified transportation fringe benefit and the monthly limitation for qualified parking increases to $300, up $20 from the limit for 2022,” said the IRS. See page 14 of the agency’s Revenue Procedure 2022-38 document (PDF) for more details.
Employer-provided commute or parking benefits that exceed the pre-tax limit are considered taxable employee income.
The IRS has typically included qualified transportation and parking fringe benefits among the many tax provisions for which it provides annual inflation adjustments. Last year’s monthly pre-tax limit was $280.
