Happy October Families!

Dear Duke Families and Parents-
October is one of our favorite months at Duke! Not only do students get a breather during Fall Break, but they also get to see many of you during Family Weekend. To those we hosted last weekend, we hope you had a wonderful visit.
October also brings many changes to the semester! Students often have their first major assignments and exams, scheduling for the Spring semester is coming soon, and believe it or not summer opportunities are already being considered.
We are 50 days away until the last day of the fall semester! With the halfway point now behind us, your student will soon be preparing for finals. Some of your students may be looking toward internship opportunities, prepping for graduation, and beginning the job search process (if they haven’t already)! Wherever your student is on their Duke journey, we hope you and your student find time to reflect and appreciate all this semester has to offer.
On behalf of the Duke community, thank you for the many ways you support your student and our university.
GO DUKE!

Your student can find more information and full event details here.

Point of Reckoning: A Conversation with Author, Ted Segal

In Point of Reckoning, Duke alum Ted Segal explores the  contested fight for racial justice at Duke, from desegregation in 1963 to the Allen Building takeover in 1969 and beyond. Focusing on some of the most turbulent moments in Duke's confrontation with its racial history, Point of Reckoning  explores how Duke's Black students forced the university to move beyond its Jim Crow past.
All students are encouraged to attend on Tuesday, November 15 at 5 pm in the Nelson Music Room on East Campus for an engaging conversation with Ted Segal. Students will engage in lessons from Duke's racial history and how it can illuminate and inform its search for racial equity and justice today.

Office of the Ombuds

Meet Keegan Cary, Duke Student Ombud.
The Duke Ombuds Office offers neutral and confidential guidance on a variety of issues. The Ombuds Office serves as a resource to listen, discuss concerns, and help Duke community members navigate options for resolution of issues related to their work or education. These services are available at no cost.
As the student ombud, Keegan Cary can be a first stop for whatever situation your student is navigating – whether they are dealing with interpersonal conflict and/or an issue in the workplace or classroom.

Thank you for attending

Family Weekend!

It was amazing to welcome all the families that were able to join us on campus last week for Family Weekend!
A survey went out to families who registered earlier this week. We thoroughly evaluate your feedback and make changes each year to improve the experience of our families. Your input will be greatly appreciated! If you did not receive a survey link, please reach out to familyprograms@duke.edu.

Career Everywhere

5 Reasons Students Need Handshake More Than Other Career Sites
Find out why Handshake is the #1 way for college students to find jobs and internships:
1. Students have the edge on Handshake
Handshake is unique because all of the jobs are posted specifically for students, and employers are actively recruiting from Duke. In fact, it’s the only place that connects your student, Duke, and employers together. On Handshake, students can be confident knowing the employers are looking for students like them. So why not apply where you have an advantage
2. Recruiters want to talk to Duke students
The employers on Handshake are messaging students every day with event invites, interview requests, and new job opportunities. Last year, recruiters sent more than 16 million messages, giving students on Handshake a personal connection to the top companies hiring at Duke.
3. Jobs that are right for our students
We dedicate a lot of time to making sure that Handshake can help all students find great jobs. Whether they know what you want to do or are just starting to explore potential careers, we’ll help them learn about jobs and internships that they want to consider. Students complete their profile in Handshake and receive personalized job recommendations that match their interests and skills.
4. No experience required
We know how discouraging it is to read a job posting that sounds perfect for you… until you see that previous work experience is required. That won’t happen here, because the jobs are only for students. Employers are on Handshake exclusively to hire students like yours for jobs and internships.  A complete profile in Handshake can present a full picture of a student’s background and experience to employers. Recruiters can see classes, extracurriculars, projects and more—so they can see the skills they’re looking for.
5. The companies students want to work for
There are thousands of employers on Handshake—more than 500,000 actually. That number may seem like a lot—and it is—but what does it mean? It means that in every state across the US, there are employers of all shapes and sizes hiring students like yours. Including every Fortune 500 company, as well as startups, nonprofits and more.
The number one thing your student can do if they’re ready to land the job or internship they want, is log into Handshake and complete their profile today!  https://duke.joinhandshake.com
