Dear Valued Member,
Thank you so much for your valued support during the most difficult year I can remember in my career. It’s been inspiring to see your loyalty during difficult times. The ATM industry held firm during this time of testing.
Our industry and our membership has much to look forward to in the new year, including the appearance of certified Next Gen ATMs, linking ATMs to the customers’ mobile phones in a new API App model for ATMs, consummated in 2020 with the launch of the online self-certification system. As populations become vaccinated and international travel resumes at a stronger pace, life will gradually return to normal and business will pick up again. In fact, at some point we’ll see a big rebound as pent-up demand is released and cash savings start to be spent and invested when a renewed hope for the return to normalcy floods back. Our industry will be ready for this.
I would like to pay tribute to the work of Debbie Smyth as ATMIA’s International Industry Adviser, for her superb advocacy work in Europe and her new research on metrics for measuring the efficacy of Next Gen ATM User Interface best practices. Debbie will continue her good work in 2021 in a new role as an ATMIA endorsed Consultant so her great knowledge will not be lost to the industry. At the same time, I’d like to thank the whole ATMIA team for sticking together through the hard times in 2020. We are stronger together, and that truth applies to the industry as a whole, too.
It remains to wish you and your loved ones a safe and beautiful festive season. And may the New Year ring in a time of renewed hope for our industry and all our businesses as the pandemic is defeated and brought under control. Stay safe and strong!

| Unique Attributes of Cash
| |
|
Cash is so good…because it is a good household budgeting tool. We all know it’s easy to overspend when using a credit card. In addition, when consumer debt levels are high, it can lead to financial problems and stress in households. By contrast, with cash, you can only spend what you have. This fact forces us to stay within our budget limits. There is a discipline to cash use which is appreciated in all households which have to watch their expenditure carefully. In this sense, cash is real money in your pocket, wallet or purse and it is stress-free to use cash, knowing you can only spend what’s at your immediate disposal. No wonder then that the European Central Bank (ECB) has recently outlined its 2030 cash strategy to ensure that banknotes remain widely available and accepted as a competitive, reliable payment instrument and store of value that can be owned and used directly by all consumers throughout the massive Eurosystem.
Following the challenges of the covid-19 pandemic, with the associated economic crisis, cash as a budgeting tool has become more important than ever before. And in its latest report, “Cash in the time of Covid” - Quarterly Bulletin 2020 Q4, the Bank of England states that British people are spending less cash, but that the total value of banknotes in circulation has increased as people appear to choose to hold more cash. This fact shows that people find security in holding cash. Isn’t the fact that it’s a great budgeting tool part of this human fascination with, and trust in, cash?
