Bernadette's Story: Speaking up for inclusivity
I attended a Facilities Services Leadership Team Retreat about a year ago, the first one in my new position. The entire leadership team was in attendance and the discussion was around diversity and inclusion, specifically hiring. The consensus was: we must do more.
Jon Giacomi, Assistant Vice Chancellor, Facilities Services, said: "People need to see themselves within the makeup of an interview panel. We need to reach out to organizations when we have an open position. We have to ensure that there is an opportunity for everyone."
I was deeply moved by Jon’s statement. It struck a chord with me and I thought about it for a long time. I am proud to have a leader (and UCSF as a whole) who is committed to making diversity and inclusion a priority. I was proud to hear a UCSF leader speak up for us, set a tone, and ensure a culture of inclusivity. Throughout the year, from development opportunities to hiring practices, I saw Facilities Services' commitment put into action--talking the talk and walking the walk.
