📢 Introducing The Cooper Square 📢
I have some exciting news! Over the past few months, Professor Donna Borak and I have been working with an incredible group of undergraduate students to reimagine and ultimately re-launch the Institute’s internal news publication Cooper Squared. We’ve been thinking through all kinds of questions, but mainly: What is our core mission? What stories will we publish? And how can we best serve our students?
Enter The Cooper Square. Our mission is to collaborate and work with students at various stages of reporting and career development to become published journalists prior to graduation.Â
We will be working on a new look and feel. (Stay tuned for updates.) And don’t worry, stories already published on Cooper Squared will remain. But we want to take this opportunity to create a strong editorial process to really elevate our best student work.
With that, I’d like to introduce our masthead:Â
Editorial Director: Whitney Dangerfield, Publications Director at NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute
Executive Editor: Donna Borak, Professor, NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism InstituteÂ
Managing Editors: Lucy Levinson (CAS ‘26, Journalism and French) and Maya Santiago (CAS ‘27, Sociology and Journalism)
Homepage Editors: Avalon Blumenthal (Tisch and CAS ‘27, Dramatic Writing and Journalism) and Meghan Mandra (CAS‘26, Art History and Journalism)
Story Editors: Dominic Cappuccino (CAS ‘27, Comparative Literature and Spanish), Jasmine Deonandan (CAS ‘26, Politics and Journalism), Cara Gepilano (CAS ‘25, International Relations and Journalism), Sophie McDougall (CAS and Steinhardt ‘26, Media, Culture, & Communications, and Journalism), and Farhana Sabeeha (CAS ‘26, Journalism and International Relations)
Multimedia Editor: Brewer Roberts (TISCH and CAS ‘26 Journalism and Photography)Â
Now, what are we looking for, and how can you pitch us?Â
We want to publish high-quality news stories and features that have a minimum of three credible sources. Stories may originate from a journalism course or can be pursued individually with the goal of publishing. All stories will go through our editorial process.Â
Our Editors adhere to strong editorial standards. Stories should strive to meet various levels of newsworthiness: timeliness, scope, and impact. Outside of digital stories, our Editors also welcome students pitching drafts of their audio and video projects for consideration.Â
And when you’re ready, pitch us!Â
Again, The Cooper Square is evolving, and we will keep you posted about our stories and the changes we’re implementing.
