Nominate a Deserving Colleague

Nominations are due to the Division of Student Affairs Office, Kilcawley House Room 106 by Friday, March 4, 2022. Awards will be presented at the Student Awards banquet on Thursday, April 21, 2022. Please click the award title to link to the nomination form.

The Edna K. McDonald Cultural Awareness Award recognizes an outstanding individual who has made a lasting contribution to encouraging and increasing awareness of cultural diversity at YSU.

The Gillespie-Painter Award recognizes outstanding achievement in support of the Division of Student Affairs at YSU beyond the scope of assigned duties.

The Student Service Award recognizes an outstanding individual from outside of the Division of Student Affairs who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the students of Youngstown State University.

Do You Know a Student Facing Food Insecurity?

The Office of Student Advocacy and Support (SAS) is excited to launch the distribution of meal swipes for Christman Dining Hall to students in need. These meal swipes were donated by Housing residents during Swipe Out Hunger Week in November, and matched by Chartwells Dining Services.

Recruiting Our Next Class of Penguins

Penguin Preview Day
YSU will host its next Penguin Preview Day on Friday, February 18. Participants will start their day at WATTS, then have an opportunity to explore campus and visit the college of their choice. To date, 293 students and over 412 guests have RSVP'd to attend. For more details, please visit

Experience Y Days
This is an exclusive “by invitation-only” event for accepted students to get a closer look at their academic college and interact with faculty, staff and current students. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions has planned events in coordination with each college on the following dates:

March 15 | Bitonte College of Health & Human Services

March 17 | Williamson College of Business Administration

March 18 | College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

March 23 | Beeghly College of Liberal Arts, Social Sciences, and Education

March 24 | Strong Start Program

March 30 | Exploratory Students

March 31 | Cliffe College of Creative Arts

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2022-2023 school year became available on October 1, which means students can already be filing for financial aid assistance for next year! Students should log in to www.studentaid.ed.gov to complete their application. They will be required to provide the following:

• FSA ID (username and password) for student, and parent if student is considered a dependent.
• Students can visit fsaid.ed.gov to recover and reset the username and password.
• 2020 tax information for student, and parent if student is considered a dependent.

A new FAFSA must be submitted every year for federal and state aid consideration. The deadline for FAFSA priority award consideration is February 15, 2022.

Assistance with completing the FAFSA can be provided by a counselor in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships by appointment at 330-941-3506, or coming in during walk-in hours Monday-Friday 10am-12pm and 2pm-4pm.

Encourage Your Students to Apply

Which students do you interact with who bring up ideas about improvements to campus? Or advocate on behalf of other students? Or are looking for a way to get connected on campus?

Help us bring these voices together through YSU's Student Government Association.

Declarations of candidacy for the 2022-2023 SGA President & Executive Vice President, College Representatives, and Academic Senators are available beginning on February 7, 2022, and due on February 17, 2022. Visit www.ysu.edu/sga for more information.

Help Us Identify YSU's Emerging Leaders

The Emerging Leader Program (ELP) is designed to educate and empower sophomore students in the foundations of leadership while creating an engagement network to support their future success as student leaders at Youngstown State University. Nominees must be currently enrolled, entering their sophomore year in the fall of 2022, and be in good standing with the University. The cohort of 30 students selected for this program will meet twice each month throughout the academic year. Additionally, students will be asked to complete 40 volunteer hours, participate in six campus spirit activities, and join at least one student organization. Further details and a nomination form can be found on the Student Activities website.

The nomination deadline for the 2022-23 cohort is Monday, February 28, 2022. Please direct questions to Caleb Queen, Coordinator of Student Involvement, Student Activities at (330) 941-2329 or via email.

Financial Aid Special Circumstances Review

If a student or their family has experienced a financial hardship during 2020 or 2021, please encourage them to contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to discuss a potential reassessment of their federal and state grant aid eligibility. While not every applicant may qualify, we are happy to review individual circumstances in an effort to ensure that eligible students are receiving access to all possible need-based financial aid resources.

Students should contact the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships appointment line at 330-941-3506, or email us at ysufinaid@ysu.edu to set-up an appointment with a Financial Aid Counselor.

Please note, students must be an undergraduate and eligible to complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2021-2022 aid year in or to qualify for this review process.
