Undergraduate Travel Request: SPUR |
SPUR wants to encourage CHSS undergraduates to attend conferences and other research events with their CHSS faculty mentors, especially when the student plays an active role. If you are planning to attend a conference, part of your travel costs might be supplemented by our initiative.
Travel awards are made on a rolling basis. You will be notified as soon as possible whether you will receive funding from SPUR for your travel request. Travel request forms must be submitted 60 days in advance for International travel and 45 days for Out-of-State or In-State travel. CHSS students can request up to $500 for in-state, $1000 for domestic, and $1500 for travel outside the continental U.S.

Academic Community Engagement (ACE) Courses |
Academic Community Engagement (ACE) courses are vital to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences because they immerse students in intensive, high-impact learning experiences that connect classroom theory to real-world social, cultural, and civic challenges. By collaborating with community partners, students develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills in authentic contexts, leading to deeper engagement with course material and more meaningful educational outcomes. These experiential learning opportunities consistently generate strong student satisfaction and high course evaluations because students perceive the work as relevant, transformative, and professionally valuable. Moreover, research on high-impact educational practices suggests that sustained community-engaged learning strengthens students' sense of belonging and purpose, contributing to higher retention rates and greater long-term academic success.
