Welcome to Fall 2022! I’m John Caraher and this year I’m serving as Faculty Scholar for the Learning and Teaching Commons. I am also Interim Associate Dean for Faculty Development for 2022-2023, and I hope to use these complementary roles to further strengthen the work of the LTC in onboarding new faculty and helping all faculty hone build their pedagogical strengths.
At this September’s Academic Retreat, JuliA and I invited faculty and staff to share what practices they engage in, or would like to develop, in support of underserved students at Evergreen. This was a small first step in my main project this year as Faculty Scholar, which is to develop a picture of Evergreen’s current strengths in support of those students. Last year, the Commons Advisory Council began work on a framework for inclusive and culturally sustaining teaching, and an assessment of where we stand now was among the next steps identified for this process. I am working on carrying this work forward.
In a related vein, JuliA and I have also been working with Cholee Gladney and Therese Saliba on how to coordinate the new training on diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism for all members of the Evergreen community with the distinct needs and capacities of faculty. I hope my ability to alternate between donning Faculty Scholar and associate dean hats in these discussions will ultimately facilitate a set of training and development opportunities that is meaningful and manageable for faculty and impactful for our students.
