Countdown to Innovation Day! |
We are just a few weeks away from Innovation Day, taking place on Wednesday, September 25 in LSC Room 241!
The 2024 Innovation Day aims to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within the SHSU community by providing a platform for aspiring, innovators and researchers to showcase their groundbreaking ideas and gain valuable insights into commercializing their innovations.

At Innovation Day, our esteemed panel of judges includes industry leaders who are passionate about fostering innovation. They will evaluate the showcased projects and provide invaluable feedback on the potential for real-world application and commercialization.

Houston Exponential, CEO
|
Natara is the President/Chief Executive Officer for Houston Exponential in Houston, TX founded in October 2022. Houston Exponential was created to accelerate the development of Houston’s innovation economy by fostering a robust ecosystem that supports high-growth, high-impact startups. Houston Exponential will convene the ecosystem, helping to build an innovation district in Houston by attracting talent to the region and promoting Houston’s image, both locally and nationally, as a vibrant innovative economy where startups.

| Jon Lambert

Jon brings over 30 years of professional experience and organizational and operational leadership across the public and private sector. Prior to joining The Cannon, he served in a number of leadership roles with KPMG including four years as Executive Director of Investment Operations for KPMG Capital providing oversight to a diverse portfolio of global investment companies. Jon played key roles in the formation and growth of a number of start-up entities and M&A driven rapid growth companies including Houston based Equaterra, SourceNet Solutions, Superstand Entertainment Co. and Universal Computer Systems.

|
Chris Tritico is one of the founding members of Tritico Rainey, PLLC in Houston, TX. He is licensed to practice law in the State of Texas and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth and the Tenth Circuits, and the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, The Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association, The Harris County Criminal Lawyers Association, President 2012 and The Houston Bar Association. A criminal defense attorney his entire career, Mr. Tritico handles cases in both state and federal courts. Mr. Tritico is the host of Fox26Law on Fox 26 KRIV and the legal analyst for Fox 26 and New Radio 740 KTRH in Houston.

Alfredo Arvide
Chief Innovation Officer, Blue People
|
With close to 20 years of professional work experience, Alfredo Arvide is a versatile marketing executive and technology expert with an entrepreneurial spirit. He is a well-respected leader that strives to achieve positive business results while maintaining focus on developing people. Today, Alfredo is the Chief Innovation Officer for Blue People, and resides in Houston, TX where he is laser focused on helping his clients solve their most complex business challenges by leveraging innovative technology solutions. Born in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Alfredo faced the same challenges many immigrants overcome and knows first-hand what it takes to create a prosperous and meaningful life in the United States. With a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from the University of Notre Dame, a Master’s in Technology Commercialization from the University of Texas at Austin, and as a certified Houston Leadership Fellow of Class XXXIX, Alfredo is also well equipped to advise and lead the next generation towards success.

Doug Franklin is a Houston native who is focused on uplifting the future of business. He is co-founder and CEO of DeckLaunch, a company that helps aspiring founders validate startup ideas to seek funding and investment opportunities. He also serves as Managing Partner for marketing, leadership and organizational behavior projects with Crowned LLC. Doug specializes in taking concepts from ideation to validated concept and developing marketing and operational strategies. He also is adept at coaching and training leadership and team competencies for startup founders and teams.

Oleg Lysiak

Oleg, with a solid foundation in entrepreneurship and economics, actively engages in the Houston startup ecosystem. He offers his expertise in assisting startups with software development and growth strategies. Beyond his hands-on approach, Oleg is a founder, an angel investor and mentor, providing both financial support and invaluable guidance to emerging ventures. His genuine commitment to fostering innovation and nurturing connections has positively influenced numerous businesses in the region.

Derrell Noris
CEO, Fresh Tech Solutionz
|
Derrell Noris was born and raised on the east side of Houston, TX. He earned his bachelor's degree in Computer Science from Prairie View A&M University, and a master’s degree in computer engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Derrell was hired as a software engineer at Tata Consultancy Services, a global software consulting firm with over 600,000 employees. Derrell left corporate America after 5 years as a developer and business relationship manager and is currently the CEO/FEO and Founder of Fresh Tech Solutionz. Derrell has won the Opulence Tech Titan Award 3 years in a row for his work at Fresh Tech Solutionz. He was inducted into Who’s Who in America in 2022 and won the Strategic Vision Award in Technology at the 2023 Young Gifted & Black Entrepreneurial Awards in Queens, NY. The Houston Business Journal also honored Derrell in 2023 with the Most Admired CEO award.

Need Assistance Writing Your Proposal? |
ORSP is offering a series of grant writing support sessions every Wednesday and Friday morning from September 11 through November 1.
Improve your grant writing skills with our bi-weekly writing sessions! Each week will focus on key aspects of proposal development to help you craft competitive and compelling grant proposals.
The first two sessions will serve as an introduction to our Internal Grants program and will break down the different sections of the Request for Proposals (RFP):

Adding Students to IBC, IACUC, and IRB Submissions |
Attention Faculty! As you are preparing modifications/amendments to your IBC, IACUC, and/or IRB-approved research, please note that if you cannot find a student’s profile in Cayuse, they must complete the New User Request Form to be added to the system.
Please allow up to 48 hours for users to be added to the system after a request form is submitted. Encourage your student researchers to complete the form in advance for a smoother process.

IRB Submission Application Updates |
The ORSP Research Compliance unit is pleased to announce several updates to the IRB Initial Submission application to streamline the process and enhance clarity. Please review the following changes:
• Section 1: The reliance agreement question has been revised for clarity.
• Section 2: New questions added regarding Category 1 exemption (e.g., normal educational practices in commonly used educational settings) and program evaluations.
• Section 3: A reminder has been added for PIs to contact the Registrar's office when reviewing educational records in certain circumstances.
• Section 8: The site permission attachment button has been removed to reduce redundancy.
• Other minor updates: Adjustments to recruitment, recording, and Certification of Confidentiality questions.

We are introducing a new 1-hour IRB meeting at the end of each month from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Zoom.
There will be one exception for the month of November, which will take place on November 20. There is no meeting in December.
Please mark your calendars in the event your research requires a full review by the convened IRB! If you have any questions, please contact Sharla Miles.

We are always accessible, and you can begin engaging with us whenever you are comfortable. If you are still in the ideation stage or looking for funding opportunities, then reach out to our Research and Proposal Development team.
If you already have a grant identified and are ready to begin the development of documents then submit a Pre-Proposal Notification (PPN) form, and we will get a team assigned to assist you in the preparation and submission process.
