2023 BRIDGE Program Awardees
Dr. Michael T. Stephenson, provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, is pleased to announce the 2023 awardees of the BRIDGE Program (Building Research, Innovation, Discovery, and Growing Engagement). Out of the 27 full submissions received, the review committee selected four projects to fund. In no particular order, they are:

Scholarly Innovation Summit
We will be hosting a Research Fair on Tuesday, September 26 as part of the the Scholarly Innovation Summit. Submission acceptances to the fair have been announced. To be added to the waitlist for consideration, please email Sarah Browning.
Our team has developed research posters to provide you with resources to use in your presentation. As a reminder, posters accepted into the fair will be paid for by ORSP if printed on-campus.
Consider Adding Summit to Syllabi
Please consider adding the Scholarly Summit to your syllabus. This would allow you to attend sessions that are of interest to your professional development, and it would also give your students the opportunity to attend sessions that are tailored to their interests.

As we get closer to the date, we will highlight a different session each month to inform you of the different subjects and topics covered in the Summit. This month's session is Bridging Barriers Between Industry and Academia

To help facilitate this connection, we are hosting a session focused on bringing together researchers, industry professionals, and other stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and knowledge-sharing. With a focus on practical, actionable strategies and real-world case studies, this session promises to be a valuable forum for anyone interested in building bridges between industry and academia. - Dr. Ashley Morgan-Olvera (Texas Invasive Species Institute) submitted a $65k proposal to the FY24 Texasinvasives.org Education program at the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.

Meet Your New Nightmare, the Hammerhead Worm
Invasive species are on the rise across the U.S., but they just seem more extreme in Texas (is everything really bigger here?). We’ve got crazy ants that chew through the insulation on electrical wiring, feral hogs that stomp lawns into mud pits, and zebra mussels that slice open swimmers’ feet.
The latest animal to expand its territory in Texas is a poisonous, slimy, and sort-of-immortal creature that may well be lurking in your garden at this very moment. Texas Invasive Species Institute (TISI)'s Dr. Ashley Morgan-Olvera spoke to Texas Monthly about the hammerhead worm.

SHSU Machine Learning Summer Camp
Through the William K. and Katherine W. Estes Fund grant from the Association for Psychological Science and Psychonomic Society, Dr. Adam Natoli (Psychology & Philosophy) and Dr. ABM Islam (Computer Science) developed a machine learning summer camp at SHSU.
The funded project is to host a summer training program at SHSU dedicated to introducing student, early career, and established researchers to fundamental concepts related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and other relevant methods and provide instruction and practice applying these techniques to measure and model psychological concepts.

NSF Plans for Safe & Inclusive Work Environment When Conducting Off-Campus Research
