This week's special shout out goes to the scholars and staff of Pierre Laclede Junior Career Academy for their after-school tutoring program.
Currently, six teachers at Laclede are providing targeted, small group support for Math and ELA to 30 scholars.
When asked about the program, Principal DaMaris White had this to say: "The team at Laclede created an innovative small group tutoring program that gives individualized attention to each student in the program. It is our goal to teach our scholars best practices for both in-school and virtual education".
Thank you to the teachers (Felisha Williams, Renada Petty-Burgess, Robin Jung, Tierra Metcalf, Angelleah Kellogg, Patricia Bell, Jennifer Orr and Lynda Wesley) for their dedication to our scholars.

Remote Psychoeducational Assessments- PresenceLearning
|
How do online psychoeducational assessments work?
PresenceLearning is now an approved vendor working with the Department of Special Education to conduct educational assessments for purposes of identification under IDEA. School psychologists use a secure online platform to utilize a combination of direct student assessment, standardized assessment tools, student work samples, clinical observation (via webcam), records review, parent/teacher/student interviews, developmental/medical histories, and norm-referenced-standardized rating scales.
Remote school psychologists start by joining the assessment-planning meeting with the school team to determine the appropriate plan under the direction of the Office of Special Education. Students are assessed individually in a quiet, confidential environment as designated by the school leader. An onsite proctor from the OSE who is directed by the remote school psychologist monitors students.
A document camera at the testing site enables the school psychologist to observe students as they complete response booklets or use manipulatives. Once the test is complete, the onsite proctor sends the student response booklet to the school psychologist, who scores it and writes a report which they share at the results and eligibility meeting.
Additional information will be forthcoming as we finalize our partnership with PresenceLearning.

Extended School Year – Summer 2022

What is ESY (Extended School Year)
What are Extended School Year (ESY) Services?
What is the purpose of ESY services?
- The purpose of ESY services is to assist students in maintaining the skills at risk of regression or for students with severe disabilities to attain the critical skills or self-sufficiency goals essential to the student's continued progress. It is not a means to develop or enhance new skills. Secondary students can receive elective credit for ESY services.
Who determines whether a student with a disability needs ESY services? When does this happen?
The IEP team determines whether there is a need for ESY services. The IEP team includes the student's parent/guardian, the student (if appropriate), special and general education teachers, related service providers, school administrator or designee, and other participants that may be helpful to the process such as a psychologist. The need for ESY services may be determined at any IEP meeting if appropriate data have been collected to support the decision.

Parents Travel to Jefferson City for Parent Day of Action
On February 9, 2022, 45 parents led by our Parent Action Council (PAC) made a trip to Jefferson City to address legislators about several bills that could impact Saint Louis Public Schools (SLPS). Carrying signs and wielding data, these parents took personal time to go and advocate for our schools and District.
Led by Emily Koeltzow, PAC Chair and SLPS’ Gloria Nolan, Parent Liaison, our contingent spoke with passion about why families choose SLPS. Parents also spoke on the importance of the much-needed support programs funded by the same money House Bill 1552 seeks to take away from SLPS.
We thank each parent, staff member, union leader, clergyperson and board member for making the trip and for their dedication to lifting up our collective voice in the legislature.
