December District Leader Newsletter

Dear Leader,

Happy Holidays! We are so appreciative of the time and energy you have given to the speech and debate community and our organization this past year. We hope you and your family have a safe and relaxing season. Below, we share final district resources and information for 2018!

Student of the Year Award Ceremony Script

The District Student of the Year Award recognizes one graduating senior from a district who best represents the tenets of the Association’s Code of Honor. District nominations are collected via this standard form and a copy of each nomination is sent to the district chair and the national office. Each year, six students who win their district award are selected as finalists for the William Woods Tate, Jr., National Student of the Year award.
As you plan to announce your District Student of the Year, check out our editable script for your award ceremony!

NEW: Easier Big Questions District Rules

We’ve heard from districts that the Big Questions district rules create an additional challenge for running a high-quality event. As a result, we’ve made a few changes to the district rules, effective immediately. View more information and contact Katie Hines if your district would like to sign up to send a qualifier to Dallas for a chance to compete for $20,000 in scholarships! Rule changes are as follows:
  • All students must be members before participating.
  • Ten minimum individual competitors from at least 2 schools are required.
  • Tournaments must use debate tabulation method (double down or pilot) being used for all other district debate events.

Leaders, Apply to Attend the 2019 Inclusion Workshop!

The 2019 NSDA Inclusion Workshop for coaches and educators is now open for applications! The workshop will take place August 7-8 in Colorado Springs, following the National Conference. The workshop is free for attendees and limited financial support for housing is available.
Attendees will learn strategies for effective engagement in dialogue about racial diversity, inclusion, and achievement gaps in education. At the recommendation of our facilitators, space at the workshop is limited and the makeup of our attendees will reflect the demographics of our student membership.
