Students analyze the field of sport communication research. Students explore sport issues across various communication contexts. Students apply theory and research-based approaches to effectively communicate sport-related issues. Students also examine ethical considerations and the role of sport in culture.

Students analyze the theory, research, and practice of communicating within and across cultures with an emphasis on application to the student’s own intercultural communication. Topics may include a comparison of various cultures, culture shock, racism, and prejudice.

Students examine patient and physician communication skills. Topics may include communicating social support for those with serious illnesses, survivorship, identity issues, media influence, and e-health across a wide range of communication contexts. Course Equivalents: COMS 3372.

Students illustrate the history of risk communication research. Students explore communication as it occurs in various types of personal relationships with a special focus on romantic relationships and close friendships. | Dr. Caleb George Hubbard presented "The Character's Curse of When a Character Follows an Actor: Introducing and Understanding the Phenomenon of Character Baggage", exploring why we can't unsee certain roles — and what that says about us as fans and viewers.

Dr. Colton Krawietz shared his latest research on "Goals and Tactics During Avoidant Interactions" with scholars from around the world!

Dr. Frances Brandau and Instructor Dena Horne teamed up with Adannaa O. Alexander from the Department of Public Health to present on "Bridging Theory and Practice: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Academic Community Engagement" at the University of Hawaii.

| Dr. Anya Lu traveled to Tokyo to present on the research on the use of Virtual Reality in public speaking conducted by her, instructors Allyzah Allene D. Cabugao and Dena Horne, in collaboration with Drs. Dixuan Cui and Shengjie Yao from Mass Communication.

Engaging Explorations with the Teaching & Learning Center |

Dr. Caleb George Hubbard proudly represented us in the Teaching & Learning Center's "Engaging Explorations" summer seminars alongside Dr. Amy Ray, Dr. Christine Cardinal, and Adannaa O. Alexander as the seminar facilitators! These week-long sessions brought together educators from across campus to reimagine what engaged learning looks like.
Dr. Hubbard helped showcase innovative, hands-on teaching strategies—and he wasn't alone! Instructor Dena Horne attended the May session, followed by Instructors Allyzah Allene D. Cabugao and Kristen Hester in June.

| This summer, Dr. Hubbard was named the new Vice Chair of the National Storytelling Network! In this national leadership role, he will help oversee the 2026 NSN Conference and work closely with all Special Interest Groups across the organization.

At the Paris Conference on Arts and Humanities, Dr. Zhang discussed "The Direct and Indirect Effects of Positive and Negative Social Interactions: Examining the Mediating Role of Subjective Health." At the European Conference on Arts & Humanities, he presented "Can AI Be a Good Assistant in Parent-Child Communication? A Comparison Between AI- and Human-Generated Responses:, and chaired the panel on AI, Virtual Technology, and Youth.
