Spring Liberal Studies NYU Reads
Klara and the Sun Assignment
All incoming students are asked to read the NYU Reads 2022-2023 common reading selection, Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro. We will convene over on Friday, January 20th, from 12:15–2:00 p.m. EST for the Liberal Studies common reading program, which will include a panel discussion featuring LS faculty and undergraduate students, as well as a chance to share reading reflections. The discussion will provide an important opportunity to begin building academic connections with peers and professors! Please read the book and complete the following writing assignment in advance of the program.
Select one of the following questions to explore in a readin response, which you will share with a small group of peers at our LS NYU Reads discussion on January 20th. You may choose to complete your response in a creative or analytic mode of your choice, such as a written reflection, a character “diary,” a collage, a sketch or cartoon strip, an infographic, or any other
mode you choose. One page maximum.
The following questions might help guide your writing:
- What aspect of the story seems most relevant to our society today? Why?
- Which character resonated most with you? Why?
- What is one theme in the novel that most interested you?
- What did the novel seem to say about it?
- What are the benefits and the costs of artificial intelligence?
- What does it mean to be human?
Be ready to share this reflection with a small group during the program on Friday, January 20th.
