WHS 2020 ASB Food Drive

Our annual food drive for Maltby Food Bank is just around the corner! We would appreciate your help in collecting non-perishable food items to give to our community. Woodinville will be having two more drop off days in which you can bring your items directly to the high school. The dates and times are as follows:
  • Wed. 11/25 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Main Office loop
  • Wed. 12/2 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm in the Main Office loop
To limit contact, we ask that you place the food items in your trunk and then allow a staff member to collect them from there. No one will be allowed out of their vehicles to ensure the health and safety of all.

Through this food drive, students will have the opportunity to earn National Honor Society hours and class competition points. In order to make this possible, please label your non-perishable food items with the student's first and last name followed by their class (e.g. First Last, Class of 2023). For every 50 items that are donated by students of each class, 10 points will be awarded. Additionally, whichever class donates the most food items, will receive 500 bonus points! Each student will be allowed to obtain a maximum of two Honor Society hours, with 20 items being equivalent to one hour.

Now, more than ever, it is necessary to donate these food items. There are members of our community who are struggling to feed themselves every day, and with this food drive, we can prevent this from happening. If we all work together, we can help our community members and significantly improve their lives during these troubling times. We hope you will consider donating! Thank you!

Deadline to Submit Intent to Join Form - Wed., Nov. 25 @ 11:55 pm

The first deadline of the year for the WHS chapter of National Honor Society is coming up on November 25th at 11:55 PM. Students need to submit the Intent to Join Form and documentation of five community service hours to the NHS Schoology. Membership dues of $12 paid via TouchBase are also due by this date. Students who have not yet joined the NHS Schoology should reach out directly to Ms. Hartinger at ghartinger@nsd.org to be added. All important deadlines, links, and documents can be found there.

Students who have not joined Schoology will not be able to join NHS this year so it is important to complete this step ASAP. Students who miss the first deadline will also not be eligible to join NHS this year. Please email Ms. Hartinger with any questions!

NSD Annual Form Notifications: Parent/Guardian sign-off was due Tues, Nov 17 - Have you acknowledged yet?

On Tuesday, November 3, NSD Communications emailed all families about the requirement to electronically acknowledge the annual District form notifications by Tuesday, November 17. This was followed up by an email directly from WHS to families on Friday November 13, as well as being included in E-News from the Principal. As indicated, usually these forms have been provided in welcome back packets, but because of COVID-19 they were moved online to ParentVUE for parents/guardians and to StudentVUE for students:
  • WA State Attendance Letter

  • Weapons Letter
  • Student Housing Questionnaire
  • Immunization Record Sharing
For those parents/guardians that have not yet completed the acknowledgement, we ask that you login to ParentVUE today to view and acknowledge these forms, as the due date has passed.

We ask that you login to ParentVUE today to view these forms.
  • If you have never logged into ParentVUE, you will find instructions on how to do so when you click the link above.
  • Please know that when you next login to ParentVUE, you will be prompted to download, read, and take action for each of the forms listed above.
Additionally, secondary students will be prompted to download, read and acknowledge the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook when they login to StudentVUE. Families with elementary students are encouraged to review the handbook together in ParentVUE with their students.

For those Woodinville students who have also not yet completed the process, you will be prompted to download, read and acknowledge the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook when logging in to StudentVUE.  Again, please complete this process, as the due date has passed.
  • The applicable parent/guardian and/or student acknowledgement(s) must be completed by ALL parents/guardians and students in NSD.
  • Please note both parents/guardians and students must type their electronic signature exactly as it appears in ParentVUE/StudentVUE or you may get an error message.

Message from your WHS Counselors

Please help us welcome our new counseling team member, Chase Stevens!

We have added a new member to our Counseling Team! Chase Stevens is our new WHS Counselor who will be supporting the Counseling team in a wide variety of ways. It is an amazing opportunity to be able to add to our team at this point in time in the year. Here’s a little intro from Chase:

Greetings, Falcon Family! I am excited to join the WHS team as a counselor supporting your already incredible counseling and administrative team. I've been with Northshore since 2017 and love the connections I have made. I will be splitting my time between Inglemoor and Woodinville and am looking forward to mixing more gold and green into my wardrobe. I am an avid road-tripper outside of work and spend most weekends getting lost on the forest roads out in the mountains! Having grown up in Michigan, I feel drawn to the snow and luckily haven't gotten stuck yet on my adventures! Cross your fingers for me 😉. I look forward to working with the Falcons this year!

Take advantage of the upcoming breaks
We have a few holiday breaks coming up and I think we can speak for everyone when we say that it is much needed!! We want you to be able to enjoy some free time and take a much needed break from school. For those of you feeling behind, this is also a great time to take advantage of the extra time you have to make up missing work. School will slow down a touch and you’ll have some breathing room to make up some assignments if you’re trying to improve your grades.

Here are some tips for tackling missing work over the Holiday breaks:
  • Make sure to connect with your teachers before holiday breaks begin so that you have a strong game plan for making the most of your time. Your teachers can help you prioritize missing assignments so that you know exactly what to focus on.
  • When focusing on missing work, try and check off one class at a time so that you minimize how many directions you’re being pulled in for missing work.
  • Don’t overdo it! Limit the amount of time spent consecutively working on missing assignments. Think about “chunking” out your time and working for an hour and then taking an hour break.
  • Most importantly, give yourself some grace and do your best!

College & Career Center:
Our seniors have been busy during this college admission season! Here are admission stats for the Class of 2021 to date:

  • 35.6% of the seniors have applied to colleges (up from 32.6% on 11/13)
  • There are currently 895 active college applications in Naviance.
Counselors continue to support seniors by writing letters of recommendation and by submitting school reports and transcripts. If you are feeling stuck with an application or you are not sure of your post-grad plan yet, please reach out to your counselor for support. Counselors are hosting another Apps and Chats Zoom Room session on Wednesday, 12/2 from 11-Noon. We look forward to connecting with you!

Social/Emotional:
We hope you enjoyed a relaxing day off on Wednesday and are taking time amongst your studies to get outside to exercise, to spend time with your families, and to get away from your room for a bit. As highlighted above, it's import that you are talking about how you are feeling and to get your stress out. Reach out to your counselor or check out our mental health counselor, Christine Kakalecik's page at: https://sites.google.com/view/mentalhealthcounselingwhs/home for more resources and for referral options.

ACT/SAT Testing
For information regarding testing, please refer to the College Board or ACT websites at collegeboard.org or act.org.  SAT testing on December 5th at WHS has been canceled. We can hope for testing in March but won't know definitively until early 2021.  Please note that many colleges do not require or consider ACT/SAT scores as they conduct a holistic review of incoming freshmen applications.  We highly recommend that seniors refer to the college website for specifics admission requirements.

Sincerely,
Your WHS School Counselors

Apply for Free & Reduced Price Meals Today!

While Northshore is currently providing free meals, this support is made possible by temporary USDA funding. If this funding changes, the District may be required to charge families based on their current eligibility for meals. Have you applied for free and reduced-price meals this year?

If your family qualified last year, you need to reapply this year to ensure that your student receives free or reduced price meals once the current free meals program ends. It is important to apply today so that your eligibility status doesn’t lapse. If an application was not in process for a returning student by October 14, 2020, the student’s account was automatically transferred to a paid account the next school day. Please know that the number of eligible students for free and reduced price meals connects to the District’s Title I funding, which provides additional support at schools to help students succeed. Additionally, if your family income has decreased, you may be eligible for free or reduced-price school meals.

In addition to receiving free or reduced-price meals, your eligibility also provides
  • Reduced fee for Camp Cedar Spring
  • Reduced fee for PSAT and Advanced Placement Testing
  • Reduced fee for sports/athletics
  • Reduced fee for summer school
  • Access to Backpack Program, which provides backpacks and school supplies
  • Access to Operation School Bell, which provides clothes and personal products
To find out if you are eligible and to apply online visit our website.
School Lunch Information
NSD is offering free meals for all children ages 18 and younger.
Students do not need to be enrolled in the Northshore School District to receive meals. NSD requires that all families wear a mask and maintain physical distancing when picking up their meals. Thank you for helping to keep our drivers and families safe.
For more information, visit the NSD Website.

Is your student working this year and in need of their Work Permit Signed? If so, please have them contact their WHS Counselor via email and they can help get this signed for them.

Power or Internet Outage - What To Do

We understand that weather incidents may cause a loss of power when students and staff are engaged in distance learning. Our district's Technology, Northshore Learns, and Communications teams collaborated with educators to develop a plan for notifications about power outages, access to service, and how everyone can prepare ahead of time to adjust and continue learning. Please visit our website to learn what to do if your power goes out or if your teacher's power goes out.

Washington's K-12 Internet   Access Program: Check Eligibility for Free Internet Access

Having reliable connectivity to the internet is critical for your student’s success during distance learning. The state recognizes this need, and has partnered with Ziply Fiber and Comcast/Xfinity to create Washington’s K–12 Internet Access Program, which gives eligible families free internet access so your student can connect to online learning from home.

This internet access opportunity will provide you with faster, stronger and more reliable connectivity than hotspots or tethering to mobile devices, which will better support your student. If eligible, your free internet access is available through June 30, 2021.
Complete information and the steps to check elegibility, can be found on the Woodinville High School Website.

New and Improved Mental Health Matters!
Our Mental Health Matters page has been completely re-done by Christine Kakalecik, our new WHS Mental Health Counselor, and has valuable information for students, families, and staff. You can find it easily by navigating to the WHS Website, click under Counseling, and scroll down to Mental Health Matters. The main page offers excellent resources, crisis numbers, and videos. The drop-down menu on the left provides additional mental health therapy resources for families looking for inpatient/outpatient/groups/telehealth. You will also find a section about Ms. Kakalecik, her background, certifications, and therapy modalities. There are weekly wellness links to new articles surrounding our world and mental health. "What do you want to know?" provides weekly questions from students surrounding mental health and answers to those questions.

Additionally, students can print out worksheets to use when they need a little extra help (Ms. Kakalecik will add more in the next few days). Finally, the "Contact Me" tab has information regarding Ms. Kakalecik's days, hours, availability, and how to contact her to schedule sessions with her. We hope you find this a valuable resource for yourself and as a resource to share with other families and students.

Enjoy! Christine Kakalecik, Mental Health Counselor WHS

If you or a loved one are in a mental health crisis, call the King County Crisis Line at 206-461-3222, text HELLO to 741741, dial 911, or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
