Falcons shine! 2022 Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Awards!

Congratulations to Tatum Thompson, Roni Sheffey, and Coach Scott Bullock who all earned 2022 postseason honors from the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association (WSGBCA)! The WSGBCA members nominate and vote for players and coaches of the year at the end of each season.

Tatum was named Miss Basketball, Roni the 4A Washington State Player of the Year; and Coach Bullock was named Coach of the Year!

Both Tatum and Roni were selected by the WSGBCA to compete on the 4A team in a senior-only all-star intra-classification matchup at King’s High School on March 19.
Todd Milles from SBLive reported on March 20:
‘Miss Basketball' Tatum Thompson leads Class 4A team to win in WSGBCA all-star game
Another day, another efficient outing for the Boise State University signee - 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting - as the 4A seniors defeat the 3A team at King's High School.
Try however you want - you just can't keep Woodinville's Tatum Thompson from doing whatever she wants on the basketball court.
Thompson, the talented forward from the reigning Class 4A champions, poured in a game-high 21 points on 10-of-12 shooting, leading her squad to a 99-81 victory over the 3A team to close the WSGBCA senior-only all-star games Saturday afternoon at King's High School in Seattle.
Teammate Veronica Sheffey added 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory.

Congratulations again to Tatum, Roni, Coach Bullock and all our Lady Falcons basketball student-athletes and assistant coaches on a school history-making season!

Woodinville High School Theatre Presents: Legally Blonde
April 30 & May 5-7

Tickets on sale starting Monday, April 4!

This Spring, the award-winning Woodinville High School Theatre Company is delighted to bring the fabulous musical Legally Blonde to the WHS Theater’s stage. The show, based on the adored movie of the same name, will run April 30 and May 5-7 at 7:00 pm, with a matinee performance on May 7 at 2:00 pm, in the Woodinville High School Theater. The WHS Theatre continues its tradition of professional caliber educational theatre with an empowering yet side-splitting production, exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances.

Elle Woods is the southern California sorority president who is accustomed to getting whatever she wants - including dating the hottest guy on campus. But when her boyfriend, Warner, calls it off because she is not serious about her future, Elle trades in her parties and fashion for studying and books, in order to follow Warner to Harvard Law School! This fun and fabulous, feel-good musical comedy is a delightful reminder that being yourself never goes out of style. The verdict? This much fun shouldn’t be legal! While the show is a comedy with a heart of gold, it does contain some adult content. Viewer discretion is advised.

The cast of this production comprises 65 Woodinville High School students, including seniors: Haley Ahlstrom, Allison Calhoon, Kasey Christie, Carolyn Dunbar, David Fountain, Ian Green, McEwen Guitierrez, Cayla Harb, Erika Kim, Maggie Mus, Prisha Patel, Jacob Price, and Georgia Willis. The cast is supported by a pit orchestra from the WHS music department.

Many of the technical aspects of the show, everything from set building and sound to publicity, are handled by crews of students from the WHS Technical Theatre program. Technical theatre students include Joey Roberts (Stage Manager), Jessica Karczeski and Simon Smith (Assistant Stage Managers), Sarah Mellor (Technical Director), Marisa Leinenwever and Max Vandall (Sound Directors), Grace Long (Lighting Director), Phenix Carver and Sofia Guitierrez (Costumers), McEwen Guitierrez (Master Carpenter), Isabelle Cobbley and Lois Johnson (Props), Kasey Christie and Saydia Phillips (Hair and Makeup), Anya Egts and Calin Hill (House Managers), and Maggie Mus and Georgia Willis (Publicity). Come out and see this fabulous Woodinville High School Theatre Company production and support our continued effort to dust off all the skills that we did not get to use during the pandemic!

The show is directed and designed by Josh Butchart; Joseph Mikkelson is the Music Director; Loren Tanksley is the Pit Director; Eva Stone is the Choreographer, with Marina Clever as Assistant Choreographer. Production design and coordination by Katharina Bomers-Muller (Producer), Stephanie Penoyer (Assistant Producer), Steve Cooper (Lights), Nathaniel Gibbs and Asher Faamoe (Sound), Marsha Stueckle & Karen Severson (Costumes), and the Woodinville Drama Boosters, led by Emily Mus and Jenny Webb.

NSD Updated Late Work Policy - Second Semester 2021-22

Grading is a complex topic connected to the heart of our work around teaching and learning, and recently the district and teacher’s union agreed upon some changes with regards to late work.  Please note the A, B, C, D, & NC (No Credit) grading system has not changed, just the procedure for collecting late assignments.

To address the understandings and teacher workload concerns surrounding late work, the following parameters and strategies have been developed:

When an assignment is turned in more than one week after the conclusion of a specific unit of study, teachers will review the late assignment and:
  • Provide a “meets standard” grade of 85% for those assignments that reasonably meet the  communicated standards; or
  • Provide a “does not meet standard” grade of 60% for those assignments that do not reasonably meet the communicated standards; and
  • Provide feedback on the work.

Late assignments will be accepted and graded up until 10 school days before the end of a quarter or semester.

By the way, teachers who have established grading practices that provide students with more opportunities to submit late work without penalty than required by these baseline parameters are welcome to continue following those practices, so it is always best to communicate directly with the classroom teacher.

Safety: Remind your students...

As a community, we hear across the nation, in our state, and even locally about students, when off campus, being approached for various reasons by individuals they do not know. Some of the reasons may be legitimate, but at times could be questionable. Our students are inclined to help people and at times may have their guard down during these possible encounters, so we are providing a friendly reminder to families to discuss and share with your student the importance of being alert when approached by individuals they do not know when out and about in the community.

Attendance & Early Dismissals
Our student day is from 8:20 a.m. to 3:20 p.m. and WHS expects all students to attend school every day.  Below are a few highlights of our attendance policy and procedures:
  • Absences must be excused within two (2) school days of the absence or students will be assigned progressive discipline.
  • Ten hours of excused and/or unexcused absences in a semester in a given class may result in going through the Attendance Validation process.
  • When a student accumulates three (3) or more days of unexcused absences it will result in a conference with administration.
  • If a student misses more than 15 minutes of class, it is considered an absence
  • If a student requires an early dismissal, the student needs to come to the Attendance Office before school or during Options with a parent/guardian signed request. We are no longer accepting phone calls or emails for early dismissal to limit classroom interuptions.
  • Students who arrive late to school (both excused and unexcused) must check in at the Attendance Office for a pass before proceeding to class.
Please refer to the WHS Website’s Attendance Page and/or the WHS Student Handbook for more details or contact the Attendance Office at 425.408.7410 or whsattendance@nsd.org.

Weather & Emergency Information

Emergencies and weather-related problems can alter school schedules and affect bus transportation for students. Families will receive a telephone message from the district if there is a change to the school schedule. If no schedule change information is posted, schools and buses are on their regular schedules.
Fee Waivers for Students

Pursuant to House Bill 1660, students who are qualified for free/reduced meals may have extra-curricular/activity fees waived by completing a fee waiver consent form located on the NSD website under the heading of Reduced or Waived School Fees at: https://www.nsd.org/schools/get-started/food-services/free-and-reduced-price-breakfast-lunch.  Qualified families are encouraged to complete the waiver form. Information about House Bill 1660 can be found on the WHS website under Resources, Payments/TouchBase. Questions regarding the extra-curricular/activity fee waiver process can be directed to Account Specialist Besty Black at eblack@nsd.org.

Financial Assistance for Internet Access

Families who are eligible for free or reduced-price meals may also receive financial assistance for internet access. Learn more about the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program at https://www.nsd.org/internetaccess.

Northshore Schools Foundation: Request for Removing Barriers Support

Basic Needs Aid
When a family is in crisis and normal household activities are disrupted, students experience distress that affects their attendance, coursework and classroom behavior. NSF's Basic Needs Aid Fund allows families to stock up on groceries or fill the car with fuel so that they can direct their energy where it is most needed: finding a permanent solution to the situation at hand (https://www.northshoreschoolsfoundation.org/request-support/#basicneedsaid).

Apply for Funds

For WHS students, contact Counselor and CARE Team member Sarah Brenner at sbrenner@nsd.org and/or your student’s school counselor or grade-level administrator to describe the temporary challenge or circumstance and request support. All NSF funding requests must come from an approved school staff member.

The NSD staff member will then submit your request.

Foundation leadership will review the request within 5 days and contact the NSD staff that submitted the request with details.
