Arbor Day 2019 – A Tree for Every Portlander
Saturday, October 12, 2019, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, East Holladay Park (map)

You may have heard that Portland’s Arbor Day celebration moved from the spring to the fall, and now the time is quickly approaching!

PP&R Urban Forestry is working with the community to expand the urban forest in areas in need of trees. Increasing tree canopy is not just about making our city a more beautiful place to live – it is about making our city a better, healthier place to live, to improve the quality of life for all Portlanders.

The trees in our city provide essential services to those who live here now, and for generations to come. If you are interested in joining the Arbor Day celebration and planting a tree, come on out to East Holladay Park on October 12 for this fun, family-friendly event, and bring your friends and neighbors!
This event is free to attend, and all are welcome. Register here!

Oregon Forest Pest Detector Training
Thursday, October 10, 2019, 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm, Cathedral Park, $20.00

Oregon Forest Pest Detectors (OFPD) help with the early detection of exotic forest pests in Oregon, including emerald ash borer (EAB) and Asian longhorned beetle (ALB). See photos in a recent article about the devastation caused by EAB in Colorado here

Then get motivated to stop the ruin from reaching Portland and sign up for the upcoming OFPD training! You will become certified in detecting the signs and symptoms of EAB and ALB and learn what to do if you find an infested tree. Historically, wherever these pests have been found, they were first reported by concerned community members just like you!

Learn more about the program and register here.

Community Tree Care Volunteers

Community Tree Care Pruning Leader Training 2019 in the Hazelwood Neighborhood

Friends of Trees hosted the annual Pruning Leader Training as part of the Community Tree Care Program last Saturday.
New pruning volunteers came together to learn tree pruning basics, data collection, and to explore equity conversations. After lunch, experienced pruners and arborists from the community led pruning groups around the neighborhood!
A big thank you to all of the Friends of Trees staff for putting on such a great event, and to Larry Maginnis from Urban Forestry for sharing his pruning knowledge. Check out a few fun photos from the day here.
Urban Forest Health: Emerald Ash Borer
Photo of an emerald ash borer by Leah Bauer, USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station, Bugwood.org Ash trees have been commonly planted as street trees in Portland.
Emerald ash borer (EAB) is small, about the size of a cooked grain of rice. (Photo by Leah Bauer, USDA Forest Service Northern Research Station, Bugwood.org.) Ash trees in Portland could be at risk from an EAB infestation.
As part of our ongoing series on urban forest health, this month’s focus is on the Emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis. This insect is considered the most destructive forest pest in North America, having killed millions of ash trees and caused billions of dollars in damage.
First detected in 2002, near Detroit, MI on wooden shipping material, EAB has spread to 35 states and parts of Canada. The westernmost infestation has occurred in Colorado, with a bundle of firewood being the mode of transport.
Although EAB has not yet been detected in Oregon, it is a significant threat to urban forests and natural areas. To better prepare for the potential arrival of this critter, Oregon now has a statewide Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Readiness and Response Plan, developed in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Forestry, the Oregon Department of Agriculture and other regional partners. Check it out here.

Ways in which you can help protect our urban forest:

  1. Don't move firewood, not even across county lines.
  2. Reduce the risk of loss and choose a tree other than ash next time you plant a tree.
  3. Become a certified Oregon Forest Pest Detector and learn about invasive species signs and reporting.
  4. If you suspect EAB or another invasive plant or animal, Call 1-866-INVADER (1-866-468-2337) or click here for more information.
