Team Insights | Quarterly Question

Quarterly Question: Jared Howell
The historic renovation and restoration of buildings offers an opportunity to restore purpose to spaces through the introduction of modern technology and amenities. It also ensures the preservation of buildings and their future conservation.

We’re proud to be working on two major historic projects in downtown Nashville, including Chief's on Broadway (200 Broadway) and the Southern Turf Building with the Sinatra Bar and Lounge. We talked with Senior Superintendent Jared Howell about his experience working on historic buildings and what owners should know about construction plans for these buildings once preservation approvals are granted and design development is complete.

How Safety Director Mike Vanhooser’s near-death experience informs his outlook on life and safety

The word “safety” takes on a unique meaning to BELL’s Safety Director Mike Vanhooser. In 2014, Mike was hit head-on by a semi-truck while driving home from work and life-flighted to the emergency department after a jaws-of-life rescue.

While many people could let this experience negatively impact their lives, Mike embraced the positive. We spoke with him about how his experience informs his perspective on safety and role at BELL.

Student housing wraps at TSU

We're excited to welcome Tennessee State University students to the newest dorm on campus! The state-of-the-art 215,400-square-foot, 700-bed student housing facility wrapped earlier this summer.

Living arrangements include a variety of room types for both students and employees. Among them are four-bedroom suites with bathrooms, common areas, and kitchenettes, as well as doubles, and pods with community bathrooms. We’re proud to complete another successful student housing project for TSU and look forward to seeing how it will help foster the growth of our future leaders.

Elks Lodge preservation work completes

Our Special Projects Division completed renovations on another Nashville historic building! This culturally significant music venue hosted several legendary musicians including Jimi Hendrix, Ray Charles, Otis Redding and Little Richard. Formerly Club Baron, the repurposed building has been occupied for the last three decades by the Elks, a national fraternal order where members gather for meetings and events. The space was in need of new floors, a stage, and bathrooms.

Celebrating 10 years of PARK(ing) Day

BELL and Remick Architecture helped celebrate the 10th anniversary of PARK(ing) Day creating conversations around resilient cities. The structure, made out of SIPs (Ecopanel), allowed visitors to envision a community where energy costs are lower, structures more efficient, and community gardens abound. Thank you Nashville Civic Design Center for the opportunity to participate!

Work on I-55 begins
This quarter, we began work in Memphis on I-55, one of the most congested and heavily truck-trafficked interstates in the South. With such high traffic volume, the current cloverleaf interchange at Crump Boulevard is no longer doing the job. Stay tuned to see the progress!

BBQ in Red Shoes benefits the Ronald McDonald House
We had so much fun participating in the BBQ in Red Shoes cook-off hosted by the Middle Tenn. branch of Associated General Contractors of TN at the Nashville Speedway! Proceeds from the competition benefits the Ronald McDonald House. Director of Pre-Construction Glenn Moreland and Estimator John Grace manned the BBQ pit with team members from Wilson & Associates Engineering and Surveying. The team won three awards this year! Regardless of the competition, we love getting to spend time alongside our industry partners to have fun and raise money for a worthy cause.
