Today's  X-STEM DC 2019 videos feature "Applying Mathematical Principles to the Real World" with Mathematical Scientist Dr. Padmanabhan Seshaiyer and "WILD ABOUT SCIENCE: From NFL Cheerleader to National Geographic Explorer "with Dr. Mireya Mayor
Dr. Padmanabhan “Padhu” Seshaiyer grew up in his native India dreaming about how to solve “real world” problems through mathematics. Now, a noted mathematician at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA where he is living out his passion, Padhu is also on a personal mission to change the often-negative perception and image that students have about math. Discover the motivating techniques he uses to turn math haters into math lovers.
In the pursuit of a career in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), you don’t have to give up other things that you love such as cheerleading, art, sports and dancing, renowned primatologist Mireya Mayor often tells students, including young girls. Mireya — a former NFL cheerleader for the Miami Dolphins, daughter of Cuban immigrants, and mother of six – knows of what she speaks. “I was a cheerleader who had grown up taking ballet and piano lessons,” she said in an interview with the National Geographic. It was in anthropology class during college when the desire to pursue the study of primates hit her. “I was seized by the fact that some of the most incredible animals on the verge of extinction had never been studied, and that in some cases, not even a mere photograph existed to show their existence.”
This summer, keep kids engaged with our FREE X-STEM video library! Our X-STEM videos are a terrific educational resource for teachers and parents. Students can search our STEM topics and hear from a variety of visionaries exploring conservation, medical research, space travel, math, weather patterns, and much more!
