Share the Nationals Hired Judge Board

Each year, schools hire experienced judges to fulfill their National Tournament judging obligation. To facilitate this process for the online 2020 National Tournament, we've created a Hired Judging Board where coaches can connect with folks interesting in judging.

Submit Legislation for the National Congress

If you have (or anticipate having) students competing in the National Congress, please be sure to check with your district chair about the two pieces of legislation your district can submit to the docket. All legislation must be sumitted by chairs using NSDA templates by tomorrow, April 15

Duo Lesson Plans and Tips

In this Duo lesson plan from Colorado College, students practice creating authentic conversation off-script and in-character. The duo pre-determines places their characters might meet, then acts as though they've met there, conversing, behaving, and responding in character. After a few minutes, the coach says ‘confession’ and, in character, one of the students reveals something of great importance which has the potential to change their relationship, for better or for worse. Download the full lesson plan »
In Practice » In last week's Duo Watch Party, our 2019 champions Kyle and Kevin Ahern referenced doing a similar off-script in-character practice. Plus, Kyle shared how he journaled in character and wrote out Donnie Darko's internal monologue throughout the script to get into his headspace and bring life to the performance. Your students can try out all of the above from home!

Advanced Public Speaking Activities

Students can improve their skills for public speaking events from home with this collection of activities and suggestions for classroom assessment. Check out two excerpts below!
  • Perform your event with NO time limit or emotional variance as a factor in your performance. Instead of using filler words, pause. Any time you have a filler word, start over from the beginning. Repeat the activity tomorrow.
  • Write a 250-word summary of your speech or performance. Then cut down the word count again and again. Here’s a rule of thumb: If you can’t describe your argument, plot, or topic in under 15 words, it is likely too complex for a general audience to understand.

Enter Service Points

Consider reaching out to students, especially seniors, about points for previous service activities! Students can earn up too 200 service points per year, and coaches can earn special awards for service to the Association, too.
