Mom's Quiet Wisdom - a Mother's Day Reflection | |
|
|
Growing up, my mom had a way of speaking simple Biblical truths that would quietly shape the way I see the world. A particular Bible verse she often shared has stayed with me through every stage of my life thus far: "Be still and know that I am God" Psalm 46:10
When I was little, I didn't fully grasp the depth of these words. Life for a child feels fast, and full of small emergencies - scraped knees, shed tears, sibling rivalry,

homesickness, peer pressure, the little dramas that felt huge at the time, mistakes made, and the challenges of growing into an adult. But my mom, through the words of Psalm 46, would remind me to pause, breathe, and trust. Be still. It is such a grounding verse. Quiet your worries. Stop panicking. Stop trying to control everything around you and remember that God is in charge. And in that stillness, recognize that God is always with us, guiding us, loving us, and holding our lives in His hands. Working things out for our good.
Now as an adult, I see the wisdom she poured into those teaching moments. A reminder that God's presence does not waver when life does. Mother's Day isn't just a celebration of a mother's love for her children - it's a celebration of guidance, of lessons that shape our hearts, and of the quiet ways that Christian moms teach us to trust in the bigger picture, guiding us toward a relationship with God that will sustain us long after we leave home. And long after she is gone.
This Mother's Day, I reflect on my mom's words with gratitude. Her influence was immeasurable. It is the verse I cling to when life feels loud. My pause button. Her wisdom continues to calm me in times of uncertainty, reminding me that sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is simply be still and know that He is God.

During Nurses Week, we want to take a moment to personally thank each of our nurses for the care given so faithfully ever day. They bring not only skill and professionalism, but also kindness, patience, and a genuine connection to our residents and their families.
The relationships they build and the comfort they provide do not go unnoticed. They are a steady presence in both every day moments and the more challenging times, and that means so much to our

Congratulations to Sheila Schmidt for 40 years of service to The Lutheran Home and Kingsway! Sheila began her career as a Nurse's Aide for The Lutheran Home back in 1986. She worked in a variety of roles over the years that included Neighborhood Coordinator and Staffing Coordinator. After 22 years at The Lutheran Home, a desire for a new challenge led Sheila to move over to Kingsway when it was opened in 2008. Here she has continued as a Home Health Aide, ultimately making the decision to follow her heart and dedicate her schedule to Sophie's Suites, focusing on our Dementia residents.
Although Sheila attempted nursing school on several occasions, major family events continued to redirect her path. Her work as a home health aide has never been "just a job". She believes it was God's calling for her life. A calling rooted in the belief that every individual deserves dignity, comfort, and connection. Her approach embraces the whole person - physical, emotional, social, and spiritual care. She creates a sense of comfort that cannot be taught - it comes from the heart. What sets Sheila apart is the intention behind every action.
What Sheila hopes to pass on to those that follow behind her is that they truly know the importance of the work they do. That true caregiving extends far beyond meeting physical needs. She encourages them to stay excited, show interest, and always be willing to learn something new. After 40 years, she feels she still has so much to learn.
Colleagues and families alike recognize her as a steady presence. Her compassion has comforted families, her dedication has supported teams, and her kindness has left a lasting imprint on every life she has touched.
After four decades, her passion has not faded. If anything, it has deepened. In a profession that demands both skill and heart, she exemplifies the very best of what it means to serve.

| As we pause to remember, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice has secured the liberties we cherish each day.
May we honor the fallen not only in words, but by living lives marked by faith, love, and service to one another.
We are reminded of Christ's ultimate sacrifice on the cross - giving His life so that we might have eternal life.
We lift up the families who carry their memory, and we ask God to continue to guide our nation toward peace.

Devotion: A Truly Cherished Heart to Heart |
|
|
|
by Ed Fredrich - TLHA Chaplain
They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking to us along the road and while he was explaining the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32
Who would have thought the day would turn out like it did. After the “terrible” events of the weekend, there seemed no reason to remain in Jerusalem. The one that they had hoped was the Messiah had been crucified. Even though there was a report from some women that Jesus wasn’t in the tomb and there was a rumor that Jesus had risen, they decided it would be better to continue to mourn at home, rather than in Jerusalem. So the guys we have come to know as the “Emmaus Disciples” were about to have a heart to heart they would never forget.
