The Spillikin - WINTER 2024
Hello Alumni, Parents, and Friends of CC,
Greetings from Mueller Hall! Believe it or not, I am writing to you from a couch in front of the fireplace in The Commons. This year it has a lively coffee shop vibe, and I am relishing the warmth as winter falls.
As usual, things have been busy here in CC since I last wrote: we had our CC Day celebration and weathered the chaos of election season without falling into the patterns of hyperbole, hatred, and distrust that seem to dominate our wider culture. Of course, the highlight of every fall is the First-Year Production, and this year students wowed us with a space opera entitled Spaceship Rock! We wrapped up the year with the infamous CC Christmas Symposium. Many of these events are featured below, so keep reading!
One of our hallmark fall events is the annual Lighting of the Hearth, which you might recall is traditionally preceded by a poetry contest. After the first-years wrote their poetry, the deans reviewed haiku submissions on topics ranging from CC authors and faculty to seasonal delights and stresses. This year’s winner was Nick Greiner, who captured the spirit and rhythm of the First-Year Program:
Read and discuss texts
Rehearse the musical now
Get up and repeat

Congratulations, Nick! Some of you may have seen this year’s contest announcement livestreamed on Instagram; the video also includes our two runners-up and a bonus haiku for good measure. Nick is our 23rd poetry contest winner, which means we will have to do something very big in two years’ time.
Finally, as this hits your inboxes, classes are coming to an end and students are frantically finishing up (or starting) their final papers and feeling anxious for the semester break. As you read below, I hope you enjoy remembering the pace of life and habits of learning in CC.

CC in Pictures: CC Day 2024

On October 29, Christ College held its annual CC Day celebration in Mueller Hall. All day, CC students enjoyed themed cookies; screenings of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown; the annual pumpkin decorating contest; guessing games; puzzles; and more. The day ended with the tug-of-war, postponed from the August CC Picnic (but accompanied nonetheless by unseasonably warm temperatures). In the pumpkin contest, Madeleine Koetke ’25 took home the Most Creative and Scariest honors with her angler fish, while Allison DeMik ’25, Sammy Knapp ’25, and Esther Steinke ’25 proved victorious in the Funniest and Most CC categories with their homage to Professor Upton. The senior class, motivated by desire for revenge following a loss in the 2023 picnic, swept the tug-of-war tournament in resounding fashion.

 2024 First-Year Production Blasts Off

Last month, the first-year cohort took four packed audiences on quite a musical journey with Spaceship Rock, the story of a group of death row inmates offered an opportunity for exoneration if they complete a top secret government mission on a distant planet — and their subsequent encounter with the planet’s native inhabitants and another group of long-lost travelers. Tackling themes of given and chosen family, environmental conservation, artificial intelligence and more, this talented group of students carried on our grand CC tradition in impressive fashion.

What is your favorite CC memory? I remember Professor Piehl allowed us to change the format of our final exam to class-based oral arguments. Technically that should have been more intimidating – think on your feet, everyone participates equally, anything from the course is fair game – but we thought it was great. It removed the division between school and life, and allowed us to speak about what we’d learned in response to each other.
How has CC informed your path since graduation? CC taught me to take time to apply critical thinking skills to the problems I need to solve. Sometimes you just need to slow down, take a breath, and decide which question you’re trying to answer. It’s surprising how many people in the world skip this step. Whether I need to understand how to fix a complex issue at work, or how to process information in life, the “questioning” approach I learned in CC has helped me clearly define key arguments, and use that clarity to find the best path forward. Thoughtfulness can be a superpower!
What advice would you give to current CC students? Enjoy the opportunity to spend time learning about things merely to learn and think about them. Your whole life will be a negotiation with time, especially once jobs, family and hobbies need to compete for your attention. Right now you can make time merely to think, and that’s a gift, so take advantage of that opportunity and enjoy it.

In Closing
I hope this season brings you together with family and friends, gives you time to rest, and provides occasion to reflect on the gifts we have been given. I, for one, am grateful for the gift of community in Mueller and beyond.

Happy renewals.
