Professor and Director of International Political Economy Emelie Peine recently wrote a commentary piece for News From the States about the class she teaches on rural communities. The article, titled “Hillbillies in higher ed: Confronting anti-rural bias in academia” asks how stereotypes of Appalachia legitimize and enable successive waves of extraction, exploitation and dispossession—and how an academic viewpoint can help students develop empathy for people from a background different than their own.

In June, alumnus Graham Dent ’00 was quoted in a Cascade Business News article about succession and continuity planning in the workplace. “A lot of time and funding goes into continuing education, which means there is a depth of knowledge in that bench so that if we lose one person another can replace them seamlessly,” Dent said.

For her summer research project, Ayla Murphy ’26 is investigating the effect of caffeine on lung function. Working with Associate Professor of Exercise Science Kirsten Coffman, Murphy has subjects complete a series of tests, including having Ben Kerr ’25 run on a treadmill while hooked up to monitoring equipment.
