Immigration, Agriculture, and American Identity
|
Professor of History Doug Sackman published an essay in The Conversation contextualizing President Trump's recent comments about immigrant agricultural laborers. In the article, titled "'These people do it naturally’: President Trump’s views on immigrant farmworkers reflect a long history of how farming has been idealized and practiced in America," Sackman discusses the long history of American stereotypes about farmworkers.
"Making that American dream a reality involves seeing farmworkers for who they are," Sackman says. "Vital members of the body politic who reconnect all Americans to nature through the foods they eat."

President Isiaah Crawford outlined his vision for the 2025–26 academic year at the annual President's Welcome for Faculty and Staff on Aug. 27. President Crawford discussed how Puget Sound is preparing students to succeed in the job market, expanding access to graduate education, becoming an AI-ready campus, and making bold investments with an eye toward long-term sustainability.
