Provost Joanna Waley-Cohen’s fascination with China has lasted over 50 years, sparked by her first visit to China in 1973. “A Lifetime Engagement,” an exhibition of her photos from the trip and from her journey at NYU Shanghai, is now on display at the B2 Art Gallery. Waley-Cohen spoke of her experiences in a public dialogue last week.

Our polyglot community includes speakers of many Chinese dialects. Faculty, staff, and students shared personal experiences with language and loss in a panel discussion hosted by NYU Shanghai Reads and the Chinese Language Program on April 16. A Chinese Conversation Night at the World Languages Lounge on April 17 invited community members to learn dialects.

The second NYU Shanghai – Peking – Westlake Probability Conference was held April 10 to 12. A partnership between host universities NYU Shanghai, Peking University, and Westlake University, the annual conference focuses on probability and statistical physics. Over 170 attendees attended the three-day event.

From a young age, Lesley Manokore ’25 knew he was a maker. In high school in his hometown of Harare, Zimbabwe, he pursued the arts, studied design and technology, and began making his own clothes for fun. At NYU Shanghai, he found his creative home in the Interactive Media Arts program and has been using art to explore his culture and identity.

Quicktakes • Last Friday, 17 students participated in the World Wow Factor, a competition hosted by the Office of Residential Education & Housing and the Residential Assistants. And wow they did, showing off their musical and performance skills in front of an enthusiastic audience. In the end, Owen Roubeni ’28, Sara Keaton ’28, and Visiting Fellow Jaecheol Lee walked away with top prizes.
• The NYU Global Show-and-Tell: Global Learning, AI, and Interactivity opened on April 13. The events included a lively panel discussion, moderated by Visiting Professor of Engineering Gene Wen and featuring Associate Arts Professor of IMA Marcela Godoy, Future Sensory Creator and OR10 Venture Co-founder Yiru Lu, Thays Leach Mitre ’25, Assistant Arts Professor of IMA Jung Hyun Moon, and Assistant Professor of Computer Science Wen Hongyi. Professor Moon led a live workshop on Making AI/ML More Accessible for Creative Exploration, and Ye Jinran ’25 and Sun Chenxuan ’25 presented Live-Diffusion, a networked and real-time interactive AI image generation display across three campuses.
