Basketball legend and philanthropist Yao Ming will address the Class of 2024 at NYU Shanghai's commencement ceremony on May 19. Yao, one of the most celebrated Chinese players and a global cultural ambassador, currently serves as president of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA).

Last weekend’s Admitted Students Weekend welcomed 23 admitted students and 15 parents to visit NYU Shanghai and get a first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a student here. 2,421 students from 98 countries received admission offers for the Class of 2028.

The second annual Adoptee Symposium was held April 27 on campus, bringing together 17 adoptees to share stories with each other and create community. This year’s sessions centered around language learning, birth parent searches, and reflections of homecoming.

From Kathmandu to Shanghai, Shreesh Tripathi ’24 has long been fascinated by the interconnectedness of the world in everything from languages to economics, but it was at NYU Shanghai where he got to experience that first-hand. Tripathi plans to pursue research on international trade, economics, and e-commerce in a global Asia context.

• On April 26, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the RITS team at NYU Shanghai Library hosted the Education with GenAI Showcase. Over 120 faculty from NYU Shanghai and partner institutions, along with virtual attendees from NYU's global network and Harvard, joined the event. Professor Mark Warschauer from UC Irvine delivered a keynote on the critical need for AI literacy to both leverage and safeguard this powerful technology. Subsequent faculty lightning talks presented classroom integrations of GenAI that enhance learning and teaching. The event culminated with a student panel discussing the transformative impact of GenAI on student learning.

• To recognize the excellence of students learning one of the six languages offered at NYU Shanghai, World Languages and the Chinese Language Program held its second annual Book Awards Ceremony. The awards, inspired by the French tradition of recognizing outstanding students by presenting them with books, honor students who have achieved high marks, shown significant progress, or put in a great deal of effort. At the ceremony, many recipients spoke about their classroom experiences and shared memorable moments in their language-learning journey.

• The NYU Shanghai student body has elected Korrina Poindexter-Benbow ’25 as Student Government President and Zandrea Xi ’27 as Student Government Vice President for the 2024-2025 school year. Students Chynna Julienne Dorado ’27, Ken Saengkla ’25, Deniz Acar Köstem ’27, Maggie Zhang ’26, Yerkezhan Zhunusova ’27, Daniel Woc ’26, Anita Luo ’27, Katy Wang ’27, and Leena Chang ’27 were also voted to the student government body. • The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Luncheon, hosted by Chief Diversity Officer Winnie Wilson on May 3, welcomed students, staff, and faculty to share their perspectives. Student leader Zandrea Xi '27 spotlighted diverse initiatives from student government and the event closed with a performance by NYU Shanghai Chamber Singers. The annual gathering celebrates diversity and highlights collaborative efforts toward inclusivity.

• Last week, Director of Chinese Language Program and Associate Professor of Global China Studies Zou Xin was invited to the International Chinese Education Expert Forum hosted by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou. Professor Zou shared insights into NYU Shanghai’s vision and approach to Chinese language education and emphasized the University's commitment to deepening cultural exchanges between China and the world through Chinese language education. Looking ahead, the Chinese Language Program (CLP) at NYU Shanghai looks forward to advancing these dialogues and making its own unique contribution to shaping the international landscape of Chinese language education.

• Congratulations to Emma Roberts-Vaurio MSW ’25 and Daniel Ni MSW ’24 for becoming the winners of the 2024 Student Awards at the NYU Silver School of Social Work! Emma was awarded the Global Social Work Impact Award and Daniel was awarded the Social Workin’ It Award. Both students are enrolled in the MSW Program at Shanghai and New York, and have made exemplary and outstanding achievements during their time at NYU and within the Silver community. Emma is currently at NYU Shanghai and Daniel was in Shanghai last year.

Diary of Learning to LoveA group of students, under the direction of Associate Arts Professor of Dance Aly Rose and Clinical Assistant Professor of Arts Gabriel Song, and led by IMB research assistant Zhang Yuyang, participated in an eight-week workshop resulting in a four-act play in the form of dance and dramatic dialogue.
