National Disability Employment Awareness Month
You are invited!
We're celebrating our 65th Anniversary and we're kicking off this banner year with a picnic on Sunday, June 25!  The event will be held at the Barrie School in Silver Spring beginning at 5 pm.  Festivities include food, raffle prizes, a moon bounce, arts & crafts, a DJ, and a photo booth.
Don't miss the fun and help us celebrate the achievements of the past 65 years and the new opportunities for the future as we continue our mission to connect people of all ages and abilities to live inclusive and fulfilling lives!
Truck Day at KFICCC
Although it was a damp day, the enthusiasm of the children and teachers was bright as they welcomed the Montgomery County Volunteer Fire and Rescue teams from the Wheaton station.  The kids learned about safety, asked questions, and shared some high-fives, wrapping up the fun with a pizza party!

Social Media Safety

As part of The Arc Montgomery County's new Technology Coaching Program, we will be offering a series of virtual workshops focused on strategies for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) to remain safe while engaging socially online.
The workshops are for people supported, their family members, educators, and all who are connected to people with IDD.  All workshops will be led by Dr. Mary Jo Krile, PhD, an expert specializing in teaching digital literacy to young adults with IDD.  The 5-part series begins on July 5 and ends on August 16.
The Social Media Safety Series is brought to you with the generous support of The Arc of the United States and Comcast NBCUniversal.  All workshops are free and open to the public.

Walmart Spark Good Round Up Program

Did you know that every time you shop on Walmart.com or the Walmart app, you can round up your change and donate it to The Arc Montgomery County?
Walmart recently launched Walmart Spark Good Round Up where customers can round up their purchases to the nearest dollar and donate the change to their favorite charity.  We would love for you to choose us as your charity to receive these donations every time you shop on Walmart.com.

Medical Equipment Collection

You may now make donations at a new durable medical equipment (DME) collection site in Derwood.  Located at the Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center, the latest DME site makes it easier for Montgomery County residents to drop off medical equipment, as well as redistribute wheelchairs, walkers, and other equipment donated free of charge.

New Accessibility Features on Apple iPhone & iPad

Coming this year, Apple will introduce new features to assist people with cognitive disabilities and people who do not use spoken language.  The new features in Assistive Access allow users to make changes in the functions of apps on their Apple devices to adapt to their needs.  Some new functions for users include setting the camera to display a button that will say "take photo," high-contrast buttons, and large text labels.  For those who do not use spoken language, "live speech" technology will make it possible for the user to have the device speak what they type.  Be looking for more adaptive features from Apple.
