Advice to help your student begin at Denison.
Denison
August 2020
A warm hello from “the Hill” to our Denison family!
Summertime on the Academic Quad
Welcome to Denison! We’re excited to welcome you and your student to our family! Below is some helpful information as your student prepares to begin their Denison journey. Let’s get started!
Re-Open Website
The Re-Open Website is your go-to resource for all things related to the Fall Semester 2020. We encourage parents to watch President Weinberg’s most recent video and read his July 29 letter to students.
Reminders for Before Move‑In Day
Required Online Courses
  • Students need to be equipped to make informed decisions about alcohol, drugs, and relationships. A suite of interactive online courses — AlcoholEdu, Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates, and Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention — must be completed by your student.
  • The first two of these courses must be completed by August 13. Students should have received an email in July with instructions.
  • We also ask you to talk with your student about substance use. Students listen to us, even when it appears they don’t. “Talking With College Students About Alcohol” will help you have an informed conversation with your student about alcohol.
Parent Proxy System
  • Students can give parents or legal guardians access to their financial aid awards, personal information, student account, records, and more via the parent proxy system found in their MyDenison login.
  • Designated proxies will need to check their email inbox soon after the student has added them. The PIN they receive will expire in five days.
Health Forms
  • Your student must turn in their health forms via their Wellness Portal as soon as possible.
  • Please note: Students may not move into their residence on campus unless these forms have been completed and reviewed in advance by our Whisler Center for Wellness staff.
Monitor and Track Symptoms
To reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19, it will be important for each member of the Denison community to monitor their own health.
  • All faculty, staff, and students to complete a daily symptom check throughout the semester.
  • Your students should have already begun daily symptom monitoring and check-ins to their Wellness Portal.
  • When they complete their check-in, they receive a “badge” to display on their phone.
  • Students who have difficulties should contact the Wellness Center at wellness@denison.edu or 740-587-6200.
  • During move-in, staff will check students’ phones for their badges.
  • We also ask any visitors traveling to have also monitored their own symptoms for two weeks prior.
  • It’s important that students begin this daily practice and establish the habit before moving into the residence halls.
  • For more information, please see the Community Care Agreement that all students must agree to before arriving on campus.
Move-In Day
Move-in Day for the Class of 2024 is Thursday, August 13.
  • All students are required to schedule a move-in appointment through their housing portal by noon EDT on Friday, August 7, 2020.
  • These are first-come, first-scheduled, and we cannot guarantee a specific time slot or date to families.
  • Pre-approved early arrivals for athletics or other extracurricular activities have been arranged by coaches and on-campus directors.
  • Students may bring a maximum of two helpers to assist with Move-in.
  • On Move-In Day, please enter campus on Washington Drive through East Gate (555 North Pearl Street by the Mitchell Center), and you will be directed by staff. Please see this Move-in Day Map for a visual for how to navigate campus when you arrive.
  • To limit the number of people on campus, helpers should depart the residence hall and campus quickly after all items have been into your student’s room, preferably within two hours of arrival.
  • Helpers should not plan to return to the residence halls after moving in items.
  • After moving in, loved ones of first-year students should head to the Information Fair outside on Reese-Shackelford Common. The Bookstore will also be open in Slayter Hall from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
For more details, please refer to the Move-in Day letter that was emailed to students on July 10 and this review of Move-in Day details.
Mailing Packages and Textbook / Package Pick-Up
We encourage you to think ahead about what items you might be able to have shipped to campus prior to your arrival.
  • Due to safety protocol, books will not be available within the Bookstore, though other items such as office supplies and Denison gear will be.
  • Students may order their course materials through the Bookstore.
  • If students order prior to Move-In, their books will be held for pick-up with their packages (first-years in Smith Lounge). If your student is arriving early, they can pick up their packages in Slayter Hall.
  • For packages that arrive after August 13, pick up will be in Slayter Hall.
Virtual June Orientation Website Is Still Available
Please note the Virtual June-O for Families website (password: denjune24) is still live and contains a lot of helpful information for students and their families.
  • The site includes informational videos from offices around campus such as Dining, Financial Aid, the Wellness Center, Student Accounts, and the Academic Resource Center, among others.
  • Videos of the live sessions from June Orientation have also been added, as well as transcripts of those presentations in Chinese, Vietnamese, and Spanish for family members.
New Partnership with GradGuard for Tuition Protection Plan
The GradGuard Tuition Protection Plan can help protect your tuition investment if your student has to withdraw unexpectedly for a covered illness, injury, or mental health reason.
  • This plan complements and enhances Denison’s refund policy.
  • The enrollment date is based on the academic calendar. Enrollment must be before the first day of class for your student’s program of study.
  • Denison receives no compensation or fees if you choose to purchase the Tuition Insurance Plan.
  • To learn more, visit the Denison page on the GradGuard website. GradGuard is a third-party provider of this insurance. If you have any questions, you can connect with GradGuard tuition insurance specialists at (877) 794-6603.
