Interpretive Volunteer Updates

Dear Volunteers,
Happy National Volunteer Week! Thank you for being a part of our volunteer community. I hope you'll be able to join us this week for one of many events celebrating our community and Earth Day!

We are so thrilled that our Guided Walk program is back in action for the spring. If you are a trained Children's Walk Guide or recently completed the Garden Guide training and have already shadowed, you are welcome to sign-up to lead a walk shared below!

Introduce students to the Botanical Garden with an hour long stroll and interpretive lesson this April: 
  • Friday, April 21, 10:15am - Commodore Sloat - Kindergarten, 44 students
    • 6-8 Guides Requested; First Look at Plants
  • Wednesday, April 26, 10:15am - Ulloa Elementary - Kindergarten, 44 students
    • 6-8 Guides Requested; First Look at Plants
  • Friday, April 28, 10:15am - Sutro Elementary - 1st grade, 20 students
    • 4-5 Guides Requested; First Look at Plants

Email Update


Have you noticed that our emails have a new look? The email addresses for Gardens of Golden Gate Park staff have shifted to the gggp.org domain meaning that you will now see @gggp.org at the end of the messages sent by staff. To improve the likelihood of our messages receiving your inbox, please consider adding staff email addresses to your Email Address List, including volunteer@gggp.org.

Interpretive Volunteer Registration and Resources


Botanical Garden: 

Register for volunteer spots at the Botanical Garden through your unique Volunteer Portal. April Botanical Garden public tours are now posted on our publicly available Event Calendar. Please register for May public tours by Sunday, April 23 so that your tour may be included in the public Event Calendar.  

Conservatory of Flowers: 

We now have a new landing page for Conservatory volunteers for you to register for your assignments, which also includes the Conservatory's Gallery Updates
In addition, we are seeking volunteer support for the following special assignment. Please email Sarah Sawtelle at ssawtelle@gggp.org to sign up. 
  • Friday, May 26, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm - Special Event: A wedding party has requested roving or station volunteers during the portion of the wedding where guests are exploring the galleries, would you like to volunteer for this event? Seeking two roving or interpretive station volunteers.

All Three Gardens: Refresher for Interpretive Volunteers

Three-part series: April 18, April 25 and May 2
Join us as we gather volunteers & staff from all three gardens to share updates on how we are connecting volunteering opportunities within the Gardens of Golden Gate Park and answer your questions related to interpretive programs across the gardens. We hope you'll join us for this 3-meeting series if you lead tours, host interpretive stations, rove at the Conservatory of Flowers and Botanical Garden, or lead City Guide tours at the Japanese Tea Garden. We're excited to convene this wonderful community of volunteers together! 


Meet the Trees Walk

Join us for next installment of our Meet the Trees series and learn more about the trees at the Botanical Garden while connecting with other volunteers.

You're Invited to this Free Public Program: Madagascar: Flora, Fauna, and Biodiversity
Friday, April 21, 4:30 - 6:00 pm
County Fair Building, Recreation Room

Join us for a special presentation by Frank Almeda, Ph.D., and Tin-Wa Maung, Ph.D., on the exceptional biodiversity of the island of Madagascar, research on medicinal plants, and the need for conservation in this ecologically unique country. This presentation is in association with the current library art exhibition, Madagascar: Plants & Insects, featuring watercolors by artists of the Mary L. Harden School of Botanical Illustration. 

Public Event: Heart Your Parks Screenprinting
Saturday, April 22, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm
Conservatory Valley

Join the SF Parks Alliance for this screen printing pop-up event located just outside of the Conservatory of Flowers. Stop by to pull your own screen print designed by local artist
Orlie K in celebration of Earth Day! Sarah Sawtelle will be at the event, tabling for the Gardens of Golden Gate Park, if you would like to volunteer with her that day, please email her at ssawtelle@gggp.org

Nature Journaling
Typically second and fourth Mondays of the month at noon

Join our Nature Journaling Group! If you would like to be added to the mailing list to receive updates on their next session or if you have any questions, please contact Mira Sinick at 
msinick@gmail.com.
