When art + science come together, anything is possible
March 2026

When I began teaching at Vanderbilt more than 40 years ago, I was impressed by the talent of our students. Every year since then, I have been ever more amazed by our students: their curiosity, their passion, and their ambitions. As you’ll see in the stories below, our undergraduate and graduate students are conducting groundbreaking research, winning prestigious awards, starting businesses, and securing grants—before they even complete their degrees. When I think about why universities exist, why we do the work we do, and why our role in society is so important, this is it. These young leaders are already improving the world around them, and their impact is only just beginning.
