Emily Phelps
Assistant Director, Student Life & Leadership/Gender & Sexuality Resource Center
The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) is excited to announce an update to what was once known as our Preferred First Name Process. In line with the recent state & SUNY mandate for institutions to have more inclusive systems in place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual and more (LGBTQIA+) students, our Chosen Personal Information Process allows for students and employees to not only change their first name in campus systems but also include pronouns and gender identity markers.
This is a crucial step in making our institution more welcoming, inclusive, and safe for our LGBTQIA+ campus community members.
To provide or update this information, you can visit the Chosen Personal Information webpage and complete the form. Students will submit completed forms to the Registrar, while employees will submit completed forms to Human Resources.
Another exciting addition is the option to include pronouns on college ID cards. If you have provided your pronouns to the institution via the form, you can have them included on your ID card. If you haven’t updated your card in two or more years, your replacement card is free. If you are updating your card just for including pronouns, you will need to pay the $20 replacement fee. I encourage everyone to provide their pronouns no matter how they identify to normalize their usage and to increase awareness across campus.
I would like to thank those involved in this year-long process: Karen Brown, Maureen Artale, Diane Williams, Susan Obergefell, Stephanie Cody, Christine Edwards, Mike Farmer, Michael Casta, Dia Carleton, Christine Krueger, The President’s Cabinet, and anyone else that supported or assisted!
