Dear colleagues,
Are you teaching a writing-intensive course in fall 2026? Would you like to work with a course-embedded tutor who is dedicated to helping the students in your class? The SJSU Writing Center has trained course-embedded tutors available for fall 2026 placements!
What are course-embedded tutors?
Course-embedded tutors are a form of supplemental instruction, a unique and valuable resource for your students throughout the writing process. They are more skilled and knowledgeable than their peers--they are fully trained Writing Center tutors--and they work three hours per week exclusively with students in one of your classes.
Faculty members and course-embedded tutors work out a flexible schedule within the following guidelines:
The tutor works a total of three hours per week in this role for each class in which they are embedded.
The tutor can attend class sessions, assist during peer reviews, conduct one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions, facilitate workshops (either inside or outside of class), create instructional writing resources (e.g., handouts or videos), and/or conduct short in-class activities for your students.
The tutor is not permitted to grade or formally evaluate student work in any form.
Within these general guidelines, faculty members and course-embedded tutors work together to decide how their weekly work time should be allotted.
How do I apply for a course-embedded tutor?
If you are interested in applying to work with a course-embedded tutor, please fill out our online application form. The application deadline is by the end of the day on Friday, May 1, 2026. Tutor-faculty pairings will then be set by the end of the spring 2026 final exam period (May 19, 2026).
Note that if you are paired with a course-embedded tutor, you will be required to engage in a PAID WAC workshop early in the fall about effective pedagogical strategies for working with your tutor (unless you have already completed this workshop). There will also be one required synchronous Zoom meeting before the semester begins (in August) for all our faculty partners.
Can tutors be embedded in in-person courses? Online courses? Hybrid courses?
Yes, we've embedded tutors in courses of all modalities--hybrid, in-person only, and online only. Instructors of both online and face-to-face courses (and hybrid courses, too) are eligible to work with embedded tutors. You will be asked to indicate your course modality on the application form.
Can tutors be embedded in graduate-level courses?
Absolutely! We frequently embed tutors in both graduate and undergraduate classes.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best regards,
Michelle Hager, Director
