July 13, 2023
Greetings—
I hope you’re enjoying the season, wherever you are. It’s been quite a summer in Chicago already—where else can you experience a world class NASCAR race through and around streets we often travel, effects of wildfire smoke from Canada, and localized flooding from forced reversal of the Chicago River due to intense and concentrated rainfall, all in one week?
Even while things might have slowed down somewhat academically, we’re still actively engaged in the DFPA office, busy with the never-ending cycle of planning, producing and reflecting on our work. This summer, the DFPA Academic Program Review will transition into development of a departmental strategic plan, after meetings with CAS leadership and the Provost. We are in process (with the appointment of a university project manager) in the repurposing of MUND 708 for Photography, as well as the re-location of Art History classes to MUND 203. We continue to move forward proposals to renovate/restore Rooney Hall (MUND Aud) into a state of the art performance facility more hospitable for our programming, and to re-activate LUMA with an increased DFPA engagement and presence in that high-profile space.
And as we transition into the 2023-24 Academic Year, I’m most pleased to show the fruits of SOME our labors (multiple searches in both FNAR and MUSC) over the past semester, with new faculty:
Dongryul Lee, DMA, will join us as Assistant Professor of MUSC-Composition and Theory
JaNae Contag will start in August as Lecturer in FNAR-Photography and Video art
Gina Hunt will move from Instructor in FNAR to Lecturer in FNAR-Drawing, Painting and Printmaking
Josh Cook was appointed to ongoing Lecturer status in FNAR-Visual Communications
Colin Holman was appointed to ongoing Lecturer in MUSC-Music History and Orchestra
And joining us as Assistant Professor of FNAR is Fr. Jonathan Harmon, S.J. an additional faculty member joining us from the Jesuit Community.
With all these exciting changes in the mix, we’re doing our best to update LOCUS class assignments, so I advise you to review your fall schedule, and report any errors to your area director and Patricia Moore.
And we will celebrate some additional transitions:
Betsy Odom has been promoted to Senior Lecturer in FNAR. Many congratulations to Betsy for this much-deserved promotion.
Jessica Gondek has retired as Associate Professor of FNAR after 27 years as a faculty member at LUC, and Professor Jonathan Wilson has retired after 47 years and more than 50 productions at LUC. Join me in celebrating both of their long tenures at LUC, and their myriad contributions to our Department, to generations of students, and to the field in general.
Breaking news: November 5-18, CAS/DFPA will host Alexander Chitungu, a Zimbabwean sculptor, who (per the Dean’s office) will “give student and faculty-facing guest lectures and demonstrations and take part in other Loyola events, such as a reception in his honor.” We look forward to keeping you abreast of details concerning this visit as they take shape. And, Chicago playwright and solo performer Rohina Malik will be joining us as our annual Artist in Residence beginning in January, 2024.
When we come back in August, we’ll have much more news to report, and an active Strategic Action Plan under way for targeted activity through the Fall. I know you’ve all been up to some extraordinary activity over the summer, which I look forward to hearing about and seeing. Full time faculty should be on the lookout for an email from me later in the month with information regarding upcoming annual faculty assessment; in the interim, please note the links below where you can update your DFPA profile page, and/or submit items for DFPA marketing and promotion. Please, all FT DFPA Faculty and Staff be on the lookout for updated information (I hope to tempt you with food and some interesting activity in a surprise location) and agenda for our first meeting of the academic year on Friday 8/18/23 from 10-1.
Friends, enjoy the remainder of July—and refresh yourselves as you begin to prepare for another year in art and academia!
