It is vital that nonprofits fight for the continuation of a society that gives back, and work to uphold the critical community services that they provide. “We are responsible for the world in which we find ourselves, if only because we are the only sentient force which can change it.” – James Baldwin
Community Resource Center strongly opposes H.R. 1, a bill that hurts nonprofits, our communities, and millions of families that we serve. We believe in the Johnson Amendment, and the power of our sector as a nonpartisan force for social good. H.R. 1 also eliminates the estate tax and severely limits the charitable deduction, by making it available only to the wealthiest American taxpayers.
The Senate tax bill, while rejecting the House’s total assault on the Johnson Amendment, still fails the nonprofit sector. The Senate bill limits the charitable deduction, meaning that 95% of Americans will be taxed on their charitable contributions, and it limits the estate tax by doubling the current exemption. We urge you to take a moment and review this summary of the two bills from our colleagues at Independent Sector.

Colorado Division of Local Affairs has released projections on Colorado regional growth until 2050. The Western Slope region is set to receive large population growth as new residents move outside of the general Front Range area. Additionally, regions in Southeast Colorado are set to lose more residents during the timeframe. Read more here. USDA is now accepting applications for their Farm to School grants. These are grants of up to $100,000 for planning, implementing or training on the farm to school programs. The program is designed to improve access to local foods in schools and applications are open to all types of organizations and farmers who want to work to create a school farming program. The application deadline is December 8. Learn more here.
Colorado Local Elections recently took place across the state. Elections results vary by county, but as a whole Colorado residents adopted plans to increase funding for schools, infrastructure, and housing across the state. Local efforts in Steamboat Springs, Grand Junction, Pueblo, Durango, and other areas outside of the Denver Metro area saw significant attention from residents and prompted an effort by citizens to mobilize voters. Learn more about election results across the state here.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development is providing funding opportunities for nonprofits to provide assistance in creating healthier homes in rural communities. The program is designed to benefit low to moderate income individuals and families by creating or improving housing developments that lead to higher cost savings and a higher standard of living. The application deadline is December 7. Find out more here.
