Salpointe Catholic Makes Security
a High Priority
Dear Lancer Families,
Schools are supposed to be places of joy and learning, of personal, academic, spiritual, athletic and artistic growth. Schools should not be places where we remember our dead.
We are again sending our tears and our prayers to families just like ours. We remember the families of the 14 students and three teachers killed in the Parkland school shooting; we once again are reminded of the 20 first-graders and six teachers killed in Newtown in 2012; we once again honor the memory of the 12 students and one teacher who were killed nearly 20 years ago in Columbine. All are tragic, senseless losses of life that will haunt us forever.
The reasonable, natural questions are being asked: what can we do to protect our children? What specifically is Salpointe Catholic doing to protect our children?
We want to assure you that we, the leadership, faculty, and staff of Salpointe Catholic take the safety and security of every Lancer very seriously. Click here to read more about what we are doing.

Thank you for your trust and confidence in Salpointe as we work together for the safety of our Lancer community.

Spotlight on Lancer Athletics
Only two-thirds of the way through the sports seasons, and it has already been an incredible year. Salpointe continues to have about 85% of the student body participate in extracurricular activities, with many of those being multi-sport athletes. Several teams and individuals have accomplished great successes in the fall and winter seasons. So far, Salpointe has two back-to-back State Championship teams: Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Soccer. There have also been two State Championship Runners-Up: Football and Men's Basketball. Three Lancers earned All-American awards from the Arizona Coaches Association: Ana Alvarez-Tostado '18 for Women's Cross Country, and Alanna Duarte '18 and Peyton Lewis '18 for Women's Volleyball. After placing third in State Wrestling, Brian Corrales '18 was named the Division III Upper Weight Class Wrestler of the Year. Eighteen Lancers committed to playing their respective sports at the collegiate level. Click here to read more about this and much more, including photos.

Living the Lenten Season
Join the Salpointe community on a Lenten journey through the three practices of giving alms, fasting, and praying.

Alms: Salpointe is contributing to Catholic Relief Services through Operation Rice Bowl. Sr. Helen, Br. Mike, Br. Kevin, and Fr. Brian have agreed to be "ice bucketed" if we raise $4,000 by March 9. Additionally, if at the end of Lent we raise $6,000, Br. Mike and Br. Kevin will buzz cut their hair, and if we raise $8,000, they will shave their heads shiny bald on Friday, April 13.
Fast: As a community, we are fasting from grumbling. In the words of St. Benedict's Toolbox, grumbling "is destructive and destroys community." Read more.

Pray:
The new Stations of the Cross around campus present multiple ways to pray during Lent:
     - Pray the Stations online if you're near or far away.
     - Walk through the Stations around campus using the printable guides from Campus Ministry.
     - Meditate on the images of the mosaic Stations of the Cross.

Students Explore Vocations to Religious Life
Salpointe's Campus Ministry Department recently hosted the first vocations presentation for students exploring vocations to the religious life. The 21 students who attended had the opportunity to hear from 11 religious priests, brothers, and sisters. "My goal is that this would awaken something in you that you will continue to discern, to be curious about, and to find out more about," said Fr. Jorge Farias-Saucedo, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Tucson. "We are all called, in a sacramental way, to serve. Marriage, single life, and religious life are all about service. When God calls you to religious life, He is inviting you to come and serve as a religious to others. In the words of Sr. Ines Sandoval, O.C.D., "there is only one vocation: marriage to Christ. We do that either as religious or married people." This vocations presentation was a beginning step for many students towards discerning God's vocation for them. "God gives us each a call to holiness," Fr. Jorge said. "You have to actually reach out to it throughout your lifetime. You have to live your faith according to God's will and always be happy."
