Acts 1:15-22
15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.” 18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:
“‘May his place be deserted;
    let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and,
“‘May another take his place of leadership.’
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

New International Version (NIV)
“What will you do next?”  Remember years ago, an advertisement campaign for an amusement park caught famous people and athletes at moments of great triumph and asked them, “What will you do next?”  In each case, they informed the waiting world of their plan to travel to Florida to go to a theme park.  Pardon me for thinking, there must be more!

While God’s people waited together for the promised Holy Spirit, constantly praying, Peter stood up and spoke up.  With Judas Iscariot gone, only eleven of the original twelve disciples remained.  Judas had shared in the ministry before he became a guide for the ones who arrested Jesus.  With Judas gone, the church needed to find another leader to take his place.  As they prayed, God revealed to Peter through the scriptures that the church needed another witness.

As followers of Christ, we should not be surprised if God speaks to us through his word as we pray.  When people fail and fall, God still moves the church forward.  How do we know what we are to do?  We pray and we listen to God speak through his word.

Our worship this weekend reminded me of my first sermon before the whole church at Rhein Valley Baptist Church in Waldorf, Germany.  It was in the fall of my freshman year in High School.  I preached from several texts the acronym: G.R.O.W.  I had four points in my seven-minute sermon.  “Go to God in prayer daily.  Read God’s word.  Obey God’s voice.  Witness to others about what God has done for you.”  Almost half a century later, those words still ring true.  What will we do next in this new year?  G.R.O.W.   As we talk to God, God is talking to us.  Let’s do what he says!

Pray with me:
Father, we come to you early, earnestly seeking your will.  We do not want to move without you.  Speak to your people, Father.  Show us your will.  Raise up the leaders your churches need for this season in our ministry.  Fill us with the courage and the character to do your will with all of our hearts.  We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
We begin the new year of 2024 with great anticipation.  Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
