Hi Neighbor!

What’s your lunch routine? For the past ten years or so I’ve eaten the same thing for lunch every day: a sandwich, yogurt and a small(ish) piece of chocolate. It’s evolved a bit—I swapped out turkey for avocado and regular yogurt for Greek a few years back—but not much. I know some of you are shaking your head in disbelief, but I never tire of my simple lunch fare. In fact, I look forward to it.

After all these years, I’ve never thought much about my lunch routine—or what it says about me—until I read this article.

Apparently, there is a whole subculture of people out there like me who eat the same thing for lunch every day. My first thought was that we should start a Facebook group or plan a convention. (The best part? NO NEED to order lunch; we’ll gladly pack our own!) In the article, the author cited a variety of reasons for eating the same thing every day, from dietary restrictions to decision fatigue to a desire to save money. Of course some people just write us off as boring and uninspired. To those critics I insist that I’m saving my creative energy for other, more important pursuits, like writing this newsletter!

Ten years from now, will I still be eating the same thing for lunch? Who knows? What I do know is that when something works, I tend to stick with it.

We asked Mark Fox, principal of residential construction at Gardner/Fox Associates, his top 3 tips to keep in mind when renovating:
Hire professionals that you can work with easily! You are going to be spending a lot of time with your design and construction team. It’s important to hire people that you like and trust. You want to make sure you “click” with your contractor. This almost sounds like the set up to a blind date! These people are going to be living with you in your home while they work on your project (which can take a while depending on what you’re renovating), you want to make sure you feel comfortable.
Take your time with your design phase! Once you make the decision to renovate, everything is exciting and most of the time folks want to rush to construction so they can have their new, beautiful space. It is a lot cheaper to erase a few lines on a drawing than to tear down a wall during construction. Thorough understanding of documents results in better budgets, more accurate bids, and overall ease during construction. The more on paper, the happier you will be in the long run. Even when it comes to finishing details, you’ll want to pick them out early and with a clear head during the design phase. This will save time, energy, and overall frustration down the line.
Builders want to stay on schedule! There is a preconceived notion that contractors aren’t concerned with finishing your project. Fun fact: builders want to stay on schedule! Construction profitability is based on completing a project within the allotted time. Therefore, builders are financially motivated to keep that job on schedule. Also, your contractor should share your construction schedule with you before the job even begins, and update it as you go, so that you’re aware of what is going at all times.
