Georgia Tech’s New Tool Can Detect Malware on Android Phones
|
Georgia Tech Ph.D. student Haichuan (Ken) Xu is part of a research team that developed DVa (Detector of Victim-specific Accessibility), a tool designed to detect malware that exploits smartphone accessibility features. DVa, in partnership with cloud security firm Netskope, scans phones for malware, alerts users, and sends reports to Google to help eradicate malicious apps.

Funding Opportunities: ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award
|
The ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award honors outstanding research by Ph.D. candidates in computer science and engineering. The winner receives a $20,000 prize, travel to the ACM Awards Banquet, and publication of their dissertation in the ACM Books Series. Honorable mentions may also receive a $10,000 shared prize. The nomination deadline is October 31, 2024, with a November 30, 2024 deadline for dissertations in translation. Nominations should be submitted via the ACM online form.

AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award
|
AAAI and ACM SIGAI established the Joint AAAI/ACM SIGAI Doctoral Dissertation Award to recognize and encourage superior research and writing by doctoral candidates in artificial intelligence. The award is presented annually at the AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence, and the winner is invited to present a talk at the conference.

The Innovation in Buildings (IBUILD) Graduate Research Fellowship, managed by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, aims to strengthen the pool of well-trained, diverse PhD scholars who are equipped for research-intensive building technologies careers in academia, industry, and the national labs.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Wellness Empowerment Center wants you to know that everyone can make a difference in ending relationship violence. Wearing purple is a symbol to show that, as a community, we believe, support, and are committed to understanding the part we all play in addressing and ending sexual violence. Please post a picture and share it with the @gtwellnesscenter and use #GTGoesPurple to show your support. Visit the Alpha Chi Omega sorority house on Brittain Drive in East Campus this week to view The Clothesline Project, a powerful visual display, of shirts with survivors’ stories and experiences. The display will remain available until Oct. 31.

| Final Free Flu Clinic of the Semester
|
Fall is officially here, which means leaves are changing and temperatures are cooling. It also means an increased risk of spreading common viruses like the flu, which can be dangerous. October 29 is the final student flu shot clinic at from 3-7 p.m. Flu shots are free for students who have paid their student health fee. Make sure you’re doing your part in protecting the hive at Georgia Tech by getting your free flu shot!
