Sara Gianella Weibel, MD
Associate Professor of Medicine, UC San Diego

|
Sara Gianella Weibel, MD, graduated from the University of Zurich (Switzerland). After her residency in Internal Medicine in Switzerland, she began her fellowship in the Department of Infectious Disease and Hospital Epidemiology of the University Hospital of Zurich in 2007. She moved to UC San Diego in 2009 to work as a postdoctoral fellow, and she joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine (Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health) in 2013.
Currently she works both at the UC San Diego Antiviral Research Center, and in her laboratory on the UC San Diego campus, where she oversees bench research. She is interested in applying the latest laboratory techniques and rigorous analytical methods to address some of the most pressing problems in infectious diseases. Her research includes investigating HIV persistence in various tissues and anatomical compartments across the human body. She is interested in understanding the transmission dynamics of HIV in the genital tract and its interactions with co-infecting viruses, especially but not limited to Cytomegalovirus. She is committed in contributing to understand sex and gender differences in HIV pathogenesis and persistence. Finally, she is investigating clinical complications related to persistent immune activation.

Expanding TB vaccine Toolkit: The role of Th17 cells in human M. tuberculosis infection
Paul Ogongo, MSc, PhD
Postdoctoral Scholar,
Division of Experimental Medicine,
University of California San Francisco
|
| |
|
Paul grew up in Kenya where he got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 2019 he earned PhD (Medical Microbiology) from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and Africa Health Research Institute, South Africa, with Dr. Alasdair Leslie studying human lung tissue-resident memory T-cells. He demonstrated differential skewing of gamma-delta T-cells in lesions of M. tuberculosis-infected lung and the role of IL17-producing CD4 T-cells in the immune control of human TB. Paul is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Division of Experimental Medicine, UCSF, and Helen Hay Whitney Foundation Fellow under the mentorship of Prof. Joel Ernst. Paul’s research focuses on the role of human CD4 T cell immune responses to distinct M. tuberculosis antigens in people with latent TB infection to define the role of CD4 T cell immunity in tuberculosis control. The overarching goal is to identify potential new TB vaccines, improve vaccination strategies against TB, and determine correlates of protection. Paul’s contributions have been recognized internationally including the Rising Star by the Gates Foundation, TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative Young Scientist award, among others. Paul is a co-chair of the Early Career Researchers (ECR) Network of the Working Group of New TB Vaccines which is part of the Stop TB Partnership.
