Luke 7:44-50
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”  48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”  49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”  50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
New International Version (NIV)
I love this season of light!  Seeing the lights go up around my neighborhood makes me realize how fortunate we are.  Before electricity was widespread, young Robert Louis Stevenson watched with wonder as the lamplighters did their work on his street in Scotland, climbing their ladders, lifting the glass lid, lighting the torch, shutting the lid, climbing down, and moving on to the next lamp. As dusk settled into night, one light would be kindled, then another, and another. He turned to his parents and said: “Look, they’re punching holes in the darkness!”
In Luke 7, Dr. Luke shows us Jesus doing the same thing.  Notice the people he helped in this season:  a Roman centurion, a grieving mother, and a woman with a bad reputation.  Not only did the religious leaders look askance at Jesus’ work, but even John the Baptist wondered whether Jesus was the One the world waited for.  Jesus applauded the faith of the centurion and healed his servant.  Seeing the grieving mother, Jesus disrupted the funeral and brought the boy back to life.  When a woman washed his feet, Jesus forgave her sin and took away her shame.
You don’t need me to tell you our world is a dark place.  One possible option is to try to be around the spiritual people so we can shine our lights on each other.  Maybe, if we close our doors tightly enough we can keep the dark from disrupting our light.  But Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  Today, let’s put the light of Christ on display and punch holes in the darkness.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the stories Dr. Luke tells us about Jesus.  Thank you that even the Roman Centurion showed exemplary faith.  Help us to trust you in a way that others can see.  Comfort the grieving today with the hope of resurrection, we pray.  Thank you that you forgive even the most notorious sinners.  We know it took your death on the cross to forgive all of us our sins.  We are grateful for the light you have given us.  Help us not to hide it today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
Our 2023 Every Day with Jesus readings are taken from Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Reading Calendar. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
Please join us in reading through the scriptures again this year.  We will read the New Testament twice and the Old Testament once this year. M'Cheyne once said, “A man is who he is on his knees, and nothing more.”  Would you pray with me that God will make his word live to us this year?  Let’s not just get through the Bible.  Let it get through to us!

Joyfully,
Duane
