1 Kings 22:6-9
So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—about four hundred men—and asked them, “Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?” “Go,” they answered, “for the Lord will give it into the king’s hand.”   But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?”  The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, “There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the Lord, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.”  “The king should not say such a thing,” Jehoshaphat replied.  So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, “Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once.”
New International Version (NIV)
Is there anyone you trust to tell you the truth even if it is not what you want to hear?  I have noticed that powerful people tend to surround themselves with those who will tell them what they want to hear.  Before long we may begin to believe that everything we do is right.  We will struggle to confess our failures because, of course, we can’t possibly be wrong.

Meet King Ahab of Israel.  He had four hundred false prophets who would do nothing all day but acclaim his brilliance.  Even though they purported to be preachers, they didn’t tell him the truth.  This made Ahab comfortable but eventually it killed him.

You have heard of Elijah and Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the other twelve prophets.  Be careful not to miss Micaiah.  The Kings of Judah and Israel almost did.  When wicked King Ahab asked good King Jehoshaphat to join him in battle, Jehoshaphat said, “Let’s seek counsel from the Lord.”

All four hundred of Ahab’s yes-men preachers told him to do whatever he wanted to do.   Jehoshaphat noticed that none of them were actually prophets of the Lord.  “Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord?” he asked.  “Well there is Micaiah but he never says anything good.”  “Go get him.”  Micaiah at first sarcastically agreed with the prophets, but Ahab knew better and said, “Tell me the truth.”  “You are going to die if you go into battle,” he said.  Four hundred to one.  He had to be wrong.  Everyone knew he was wrong.  Until he wasn’t.

Find someone who cares enough about you to tell you the truth.  The truth will not hurt you.  Unless of course it should.  On the other hand, it could save your life!

 Pray with me:
Father, teach us to trust the truth which transforms us.  Give us friends who care enough about us to stop us when we are about to jump off a cliff.  Forgive us for pursuing our own ways even when we know they are not yours.  Help us today to trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in you, but to trust and obey.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
