Is there anything God cannot do? Philosophers used to debate whether God could create a rock so large he could not lift it. Of course, God is omnipotent so he can do anything. Here is another thought: Is there anything God won’t do? How would we answer?
When God chose Gideon as the smallest and least likely leader of Israel, he assembled a sizable army to fight the Midianites who oppressed Israel. God took one look at the impressive army of 32,000 men and said, “Too big.” “Too what?” Gideon must have thought. God says in the NIV, “I cannot defeat Midian if your army is that big.” Again, maybe a better sense of the word is, “I will not.” But why not? Israel would boast, “My own strength has saved me.”
God will not put us in situations of independence from himself. He reduced the army from 32,000 to 300. When this tiny army won the battle they would know, “Only God could have accomplished this.” So often God chooses the person who is humble enough to trust him to do the impossible. Alan Redpath said it well, When GOD wants to do an impossible task He takes an impossible man and crushes him.”
So often I have seen in my life and the lives of others that God likes to place us in absolute dependence on himself. Then when he does his work, we take none of the credit. God will not share his glory with another. If we succeed, it will be through his amazing grace. Every Sunday when I speak I remember that God once spoke through a donkey. This gives me hope that he can also use me! Anything God has ever done, he can do now. Anything he has done anywhere, he can do here. Anything he has ever done for anyone, he can do for us. Yes. Amen.
