Proverbs 1:10
My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.

New International Version (NIV)
My family knows boys!  Going back a number of generations are very few girls in the Brooks family.  What we lack in quantity we make up for in quality.  My dad has four sons and nine grandsons to go with his two granddaughters.  Raising sons led my dad to use particularly persuasive methods to keep us out of trouble.  He said to me, “If you do drugs, I will find you and kill you, to save you going through the prison experience.”  As a young man I took these things to heart.
Solomon had a lot of sons too.  The book of Proverbs reads like a house training manual for young men.  This verse demonstrates Solomon’s wisdom.  He knew his sons would face temptation because he had seen it in his own brothers and their tragic mischief.  He wanted his sons to do well so he gave them sage advice.  Of course these words apply to both daughters and sons.
First he writes in love to his children.  When our dad disciplined us, we knew he loved us.  Just so, Solomon instructs his own sons.  He knew that sinful men might entice his sons.  Solomon also knew that in times of temptation we can make better choices than the crowd.  A healthy reverence for God is most helpful.  Even better, we can equip our children by showing them the love of Christ which empowers us to obedience.  In the end, we do not find our primary motive for godliness in fear but in God’s perfect love which casts out all fear and empowers us to obey.
Pray with me:
Father, we thank you that you care enough about your children to encourage us to live right.  Today we may face some particular temptation.  Let us not be caught off-guard.  Help us to set our wills from the start.  Your love is now and has always been enough for us.  Keep us holy, set apart for your purposes alone, we pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
